Grizzly Peak from Ashland Middle School

One of my favorite views in town is from the Ashland Middle School. I took this picture from inside the school looking out to the north. If I was a student I would not be able to do anything but stare out the windows–especially this time of year when things have gone green. We only get a few months of rich green before summer turns much of this view a duller, brownish color.

That’s a great view. I take it those mountains are popular with hikers.

Yes, there is much great hiking around here. Most hikers go up the backside of Grizzly Peak. I’ve done it myself three or four times. There are great views of Ashland and Mt. Shasta from the top of Grizzly. I’ll have to dig through my archives to find some of those pictures one of these days.

My mother, who taught at Southern Oregon Normal from 1926 to 1928,
told me about joining the Outing Club for their annual hike up to the top of
Grizzly, beginning at the Southern Oregon campus. They started early in
the morning, before daylight. That’s a long hike by any standard –
both in terms of horizontal distance and vertical climb (about 3800 feet).
I don’t know exactly what route they took, or whether any trails existed.
Does anybody make such a climb nowadays?

A few years back there was a plan to make a trail up the Ashland side of Grizzly. The problem is that the property is privately owned. I believe the plans were eventually scrapped when the group was unable to convince the property owners to consent to such a trail.
