Dry Emigrant Lake

Today’s photo of a dry Emigrant Lake comes from October of 2014.

Although this wasn’t the best time of day or best time of the year for a photo like this, the views from Soda Mountain are very good. Dusk or dawn from this location, particularly after fresh snow or once things have greened up in spring, and I imagine it is spectacular. Emigrant Lake is very low in this photo. The next weekend I went out and took this photo.

Fast forward less than six months, from nearly the same spot, and here is what (once was) Emigrant Lake now looks like:

I’m heading up to Vancouver Lake in Washington today to catch the end of the NW Junior Regional Rowing Championships. I probably won’t see much. Crew isn’t much of a spectator sport unless you get to be in a boat. I’ll be going more to bring kids back to Ashland tomorrow.

Besides the Junior Crew of the Ashland Rowing Club, teams from Humboldt and South Eugene competed on a cold and sometimes wet morning this morning.

Hobart Peak

Ellie & Ryan on Hobart Peak looking north toward Emigrant Lake and Ashland

After living in Ashland for nearly 14 years, I thought I had been on every nearby hike. Turns out I was wrong. Hobart Peak (AKA Hobart Bluff) is more of a walk than a hike as it isn’t long (about 3 miles round trip) and only has a bit of elevation gain near the end. The sky was completely blue on the day we went. I want to go again for a sunrise or sunset or between storms.

If you are in Ashland and want to check it out, get on Highway 66 toward the Green Springs. After a little less than 15 miles from Oak Tree Northwest Bar & Grill, turn right onto Soda Mountain Road. In about 3.5 miles park at the trail marker near a meadow. You’ll be on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) initially. A sign a mile in will direct you to the left to get to the location in today’s photo.
