Holding pattern continues in NAIA football rankings

As mentioned a few weeks ago, SOU’s upward mobility in the rankings was coming to a near halt even if they continued to win. They have continued to win, but they have no hope of making the top four before the end of the regular season due to the easy schedules of several NAIA teams (Reinhardt, Lindsey Wilson, Morningside, Baker, and Grand Vew in particular). SOU remains at #7. Lindsey Wilson and/or Grand View may lose one of their last two games, but the others have very little chance of that happening.

A few of you have asked me if there is any chance SOU can (finally!!!) get more than one home playoff game. The Raiders best bet is to win out and move past Grand View and Lindsey Wilson in the rankings to #5. Then, if one of the top four teams is upset, at home, in the first round of the playoffs, Southern Oregon can earn a second home game. But that’s about the only way at this point.

Is it fair that Frontier Conference teams have to go out every year and win on the road in the playoffs? (Last year Eastern Oregon won at Doane and at Marian, the year before SOU won at Baker and at Morningside, and in 2014 SOU won at Carroll and at St. Xavier.) Morningside, Grandview (except last year), and Baker have been given home field throughout the playoffs each of the last three years, and none of them have won a national championship during those years. Only Baker has made it to the national championship game in those years (and that’s because Eastern Oregon knocked off the #1 seed Marian). So why will they, with their weaker schedules (and Grand View with a loss!), be given a higher ranking and home field advantage again?

Baker and Grand View are in the Heart of America Conference. Why are they both in the top six, when a Heart of America Conference team has won only one national championship in the past 15 years? By comparison, the Frontier Conference’s top two teams have the same records as Baker and Grand View and are ranked #7 and #11. Frontier Conference teams have won seven national championships over those same 15 years and finished as runner ups in three more of those years. Seems like the Heart of America Conference has been (is being) given unfair advantages that they can’t take advantage of. When will this stop?

For the first time, in 70 years, the SOU football team is 7-0. However, in the rankings, nothing is new. Massey still has the Raiders as #4, and the coaches will still have Southern Oregon as #7 when their poll comes out tomorrow.

The teams, ahead of the Raiders in the rankings, all have easy opponents this coming weekend. (What else is new?) SOU hosts Massey’s #12, Montana Western, on Saturday. The Raiders are 11-point favorites according to Massey.

As predicted yesterday, the Raiders didn’t move in today’s poll.

The 8-1 Raiders beat 5-2-1 Northwest 2-0 today. Southern Oregon currently has the most points in the 14-team Cascade Conference (as no other team has more than 6 wins). SOU is the only team to have beaten #10 Rocky Mountain, and yet the Raiders still aren’t receiving any votes in the coaches’ poll.

As expected, the Raiders moved up one spot, with Montana Tech dropping to #11 in today’s NAIA Coaches’ Poll. Montana Western and Rocky Mountain are still not in the top 25 (even though Massey has them at #9 and #15). Eastern Oregon is #12 on Massey but is not receiving a single vote from the coaches (despite having beaten Montana Western). Compare them to Kansas Wesleyan who the coaches have at #25 and Massey has at #56!

A big win over Eastern Oregon this weekend, coupled with a tight game for Grand View, could move Southern Oregon up to #6 next week.

Go Raiders!

Idle Raiders up on Massey, should be up with coaches

The Raiders had a bye yesterday. Montana Western upset Montana Tech to put the Raiders in sole possession of first place in the Frontier Conference. The Raiders will still likely need to beat Tech on the road to win the conference. This week Southern Oregon will travel to Eastern Oregon. Massey has the Raiders up to #4 and a 4-point favorite in La Grande.

The new coaches poll comes out tomorrow. Look for the Raiders to slide past Tech into the #7 spot.

Raiders up to #8, with little hope of much more regular-season advancement

As expected SOU rose to #8 in today’s coaches’ poll. A team must get into the top two to be guaranteed home field throughout the playoffs. Top four gets you home field through at least the quarterfinals. The Raiders have virtually no chance of making the coaches’ top four. “What?!?!” you say. How can this be with five games remaining, including #5 Montana Tech on the road?

This is another reason why the coaches’ poll should not be used as the basis for figuring out who goes to the playoffs and where those games happen. Five of the teams in front of the Raiders have no more difficult games remaining on their schedules (Morningside, Lindsey Wilson, and Reinhardt never had a decent opponent to begin with). They aren’t going to drop in the coaches’ poll without a loss (i.e. unless a major upset occurs).

Massey gives St. Francis better than 90% odds to win each of their final five games, has Reinhardt at over 98%, Morningside at over 87%, Baker at over 89%, and Lindsey Wilson at over 76%. Grand View, too, is favored to win the rest of their games. Even if the Raiders win out, and Lindsey Wilson and Grand View are upset, the Raiders will likely find themselves undefeated but with a #5 ranking. (If the Raiders win out, Massey will certainly have the Raiders in the top three).

Like 2014 and 2015, the Raiders will only receive one home game in the playoffs in a best case scenario. Should the Raiders lose one game, even if it is to #5 (Massey’s #3) Montana Tech on the road, they probably won’t get any home games in the playoffs.

Raiders back to #5 on Massey, should be #8 with coaches

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football @seannnyboii @CarterTheGr8_ @jasonshelley_

5-0 Southern Oregon slid one spot on Massey to #5 after yesterday’s narrow victory over Rocky. Massey had the Raiders as 11-point favorites. Rocky moved up to #12 on Massey, but the biased coaches will keep them out of the top 25.

Marian lost, for the second time this year, so the coaches will drop them (even though they lost to the #1 team), and the Raiders will move up in tomorrow’s coaches’ poll to #8.

SOU has a bye this coming weekend and will travel to Eastern Oregon on October 14. Massey has the Raiders as 4-point favorites in that one.

Hall of Fame Weekend kicks off this morning with the 2017 inductees banquet. The new members of the SOU Sports Hall of Fame will be recognized at halftime at the Raiders’ 1 p.m. game. There is only one entrance (due to construction) so arrive to the game early if you still need to purchase a ticket.
