The silver lining

Saturday’s loss was painful, but there is a silver lining. Due to the NAIA’s odd ranking system, which rewards prior season record more than current season wins against strong opponents, SOU will likely begin 2018 with a #3 or #4 ranking. In 2017 it took an undefeated season in the toughest conference just to get to #5. Had the Raiders started 2017 at #3 or #4 they would have probably ended up at #2 and received home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Oldest continuous ballpark in the nation

Even older than Fenway Park (1912) and Wrigley Field (1914), baseball has been played at the site of Goss Stadium (which has seen many improvements over the years) since 1907. It only took me 110 years to see my first game there this past weekend. The game (against Washington State) was sold out so we had to procure tickets from a scalper outside the stadium (for about half of what tickets were going for on Stubhub but still more than double the face value).

The #1-ranked Beavers won, as usual. OSU will be hosting the Regionals next weekend. If all goes well, they will be hosting the Super Regionals the following weekend and heading to Omaha for the College World Series later in June.

Buck Prairie

I enjoyed a lovely morning up on Buck Prairie yesterday. Snow had fallen overnight, the sun had come out, and the surface in the sunny areas seemed like it was covered in tiny diamonds. I was the first in snowshoes for the day. I was about the fourth car there. When I left, before noon, the parking lot off Dead Indian Memorial Road was packed.

It isn’t often that I find myself cheering for Eastern Oregon. Although Massey gave EOU only a 7% chance of victory today, and Massey predicted 41 points for Marian, the score at halftime is EOU 10 and Marian 0. Eastern’s offense hasn’t done anything. The touchdown came via a pick 6. You can view the current score here.

Maybe the Frontier Conference is even stronger than Massey thought…

I’m not heading to Helena this year for tomorrow’s game. Today’s photo is from last year’s contest — the lightning game, which was the first game after the prior season’s snow game. Tomorrow’s weather looks great for football, for once, with highs around 60 degrees.

If you aren’t going to be in Helena either, the good news is Carroll College broadcasts their games for free in HD. You can watch the game online here beginning at noon on the west coast.

I wasn’t thinking when I grabbed my D500 (crop sensor) instead of my D750 (full frame) to go on a hike this past Sunday. The D750 with a 24-120mm f/4G lens is perfect for hiking. The D500 turns that lens into a 36-180mm lens. I don’t really need 180mm on a hike, but I do need 24mm. When that happens the solution is to photomerge. I did so with the photo above. However, I didn’t like how much of the water at my feet wouldn’t fit. So, for the first time, I tried a different technique.

Normally I photomerge by shooting vertical images from left to right and then merge them together as a horizontal panorama. For the image below I shot vertical images from left to right, but instead of shooting one and moving right I shot one and moved down to take a second before moving right. Something like this:

I didn’t know if Photoshop would be able to merge them together, but there were no issues.
