A well-deserved honor was bestowed on Harlee Donovan as she was named the (first-ever from SOU) national player of the year. Besides her gold-glove defense at catcher, she was by far the most feared hitter in the NAIA. This is evidenced by her 62 walks, more than 20 as many as anyone in the NAIA. By way of comparison, her OPS of 1.364 is more than 200 points higher than Babe Ruth’s 1.164–the highest in MLB history. The leader in OPS this year in MLB is Mookie Betts at 1.187.

Kelsey Randall was an All-American for the second year in a row. She came in third in the NAIA in walks (with 40), was first in triples, first in runs scored, and second in stolen bases. On defense she was also first in assists and won four gold gloves as a Raider. She is the all-time record holder in the NAIA in triples.

Almost five months ago, the 2018 NAIA softball pre-season poll came out. The Raiders were picked to come in third. After the preseason poll SOU was never ranked higher than #8, until now. They will finish their most successful season ever at their preseason rank of #3 after eliminating the #21, #9, #3, and #2 ranked teams in the World Series. Nice job!

Softball under the rainbow

20170504_195339

Last night there was a rather spectacular storm in Southern Oregon. I didn’t have my camera with me so I had to settle for this short video with my phone. We had our first softball practice of the year. With the rainbow and lightning striking all over the place, it was awesome.

SOU Men's Soccer Club

Due to a number of factors (Title IX, SOU having football and wrestling, limited budget, etc.) SOU has a Women’s Soccer Team but no Men’s Soccer Team (or baseball). However, there are various club sports like lacrosse, rugby, and men’s soccer.

I witnessed my first SOU Men’s Soccer Club game this past Sunday at U.S. Cellular field in Medford. Southern Oregon University beat Western Oregon University (Monmouth) 4-0. The third goal went like this…

Softball

I took my first swings of the year yesterday. Felt great. They weren’t at the field pictured above, which is where we have our games in Medford. They were in Ashland at the Iowa Street fields. The view was beautiful. It looked like this as the snow from a few days back has yet to melt on the top of Grizzly Peak. Alas, I didn’t have my camera with me so I have no real photos of the day.

Rogue Valley Manor from US Cellular Community Park

Softball season is about to begin. We won the league last year with a record of 15-1. (I wasn’t there for the game we lost so I take no responsibility for it. 😉 ) We had our first practice of the year at the previously mentioned US Cellular. It had been raining much of the day so everything was very green. You can even see some mustard or other yellow flowers on the hill leading up to the Manor. A new portion of the Manor, that is currently under construction, can also be seen in this photo.

I-5 runs between the field and the Manor but no cars happened to be captured in this picture that I can see. The Rogue Valley Manor, by the way, is a retirement living center run by Pacific Retirement Services in Medford, just north of Ashland.
