“Foot Soaking” by guest blogger, Tony Alexander

Foot soaking. One of the quintessential pastimes in Japan, as illustrated in Al’s article ‘Museum foot soak‘ at the Hakone Open Air Museum.

Here one can gain an insight into one of the simplest forms of pleasure in Japan; so in tandem I wanted to also guest blog about another example of foot soaking entitled ‘warming the feet‘ over at The Soul of Japan.

Like Al, I have a penchant for fine pleasure. We both understand what it feels like to be on our feet all day and then relax in a hot open air foot bath surrounded by nature. The only thing you have to remove is your socks; that’s it. And of course it’s good to carry a small hand towel with you. I also recommend a nice Tenugui, a large Japanese style handkerchief which can fit neatly into one’s purse or pocket.

There are foot baths all over Japan, so whenever you have a chance knock your socks off.

That looks so soothing – makes you realize that the simple things in nature can be so pleasurable and relaxing. Occasionally, I’ll just go stand in the ocean at about knee depth. There is such an enjoyable sensation as the sand beneath my feet begins to erode away.

Wow, I am so envious of the people in those photos. I wonder if there is a similar thing locally jere in california. I would love to do the foot soaking thing. I already had a few reasons I wanted to one day see Japan, now I’ve added another! Amazing photos and tradition.

Thank you for sharing these great photos and information! I love my feet, so I figured I would do something for them I’d never done before!

I actually took Japanese as my language in college as well as Japanese Culture and Civilization classes and I can say first hand that foot baths are awesome.

I would love love love to go to Japan! Everything’s so clean and refreshing in their mountains. Foot soaking just made it to be another of my long list of reasons for a Japan holiday visit!

My wife loves a foot massage so I suspect this would be right up her alley. Maybe we need to plan trip to Japan just for the feet
