Niomon (or Deva Gate) @ Kiyomizu-dera

Niomon Gate or the Deva's Gate deva kiyomizu temple kyoto japan

It has been six years since I’ve been to Kyoto. I hope to spend a day or two exploring the city again this summer. On the day I took this photo in 2007, the cherry blossoms weren’t quite ready yet, and the sky was overcast. I don’t know if I’ll have better luck in June (rainy season) or August (hot and humid peak), but I’m willing to give it a try.

The pure water (清水) at Kiyomizudera (清水寺)

When I visited Kiyomizu Dera for the first time, I hadn’t read anything about the place in a guide book. Therefore, I had sort of a “Duh” moment when after following around the packs of tourists we actually arrived at the kiyomizu that makes up its name. I hadn’t really thought about why it was named as it was or what the significance of the name was until this point. Duh!

Anyway, I bet you can’t tell which of these kiyomizu samplers is my daughter. 😉

大黒天

Daikoku at Kiyomizudera (清水寺) in Kyoto

Daikokuten is one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Frequently seen with Ebisu, at Kiyomizu he is solo. Daikokuten is best known as the god of wealth. The mallet in his hand is supposed to magically conjure up money. The rice bags he stands on symbolize wealth. He also has a bag of rice slung over his shoulder.
