Room with a view

Senjokaku (千畳閣) and the 5-story pagoda (五重塔)

This was the view from my room (#515) @ Iwaso (岩惣) on Miyajima five years ago this month.

Senjokaku’s draining system

A regular rain gutter would not cut it for a place like Senjokaku. For starters, the roof is massive and Miyajima gets a lot of rain.

This ingenious system turns a waterfall coming off the roof into a bedrock stream.

Unfortunately (now, for purposes of this photo, but fortunately then for purposes of my dryness), the rain had slowed by the time I took this photograph so you can’t see the water cascading off the roof so much.
