Upgrade time
I have been very happy with my Nikon D600 the past two years. However, Nikon has announced the new D750 which will begin shipping later this month. I don’t really care about the tilting, vari-angle LCD and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, but the higher fps (6.5 vs. 5.5 on the D600) and higher ISO capabilities with a slight decrease in weight look attractive. I use my D600 in the ISO 3200 – 6400 range a lot. I’m hoping I can obtain similar results to that range in the 6400-12800 range on the D750. The autofocusing system is also supposed to be much improved on the D750 compared to the D600. The D750 should be at least as good focusing as the focusing system found on the D810.
I have never been perfectly happy with my 14-24mm f/2.8G lens or my 24mm f/2.8D lens. The former is heavy and large; the latter isn’t great at f/2.8. Photos at 14mm are always at least somewhat distorted and frequently very distorted. Because of that I don’t use my 14-24mm at 14mm very often anymore.
After running some numbers I have determined that I can sell my D600, 14-24mm f/2.8G lens, and 24mm f/2.8D lens for about the same amount a new D750 and new 20mm f/1.8G lens will cost so that is the plan. The 20mm f/1.8G weighs a little more than the 24mm f/2.8D, but much less than the 14-24mm f/2.8G lens so I think I will be quite happy with that trade off despite losing some versatility in the ultra wide zoom.
I’m also hoping to pick up a Tamron 150-600mm VC Lens soon.
