Ashland High School football

@CoachHall_Griz

Tonight will be Ashland High School’s first football game on the new artificial turf at Walter A Phillips Field. I hear the lighting is much improved as well. Game time is 7:15. The K in the middle of the grizzly paw in the middle of the field is in remembrance of Coach Kitchell, or Coach K, who died back in 2007.

If you already have evening plans, but still want to check out the new field, you can watch the AHS boy’s soccer team take on Mountain View @ 4 p.m.

SOU vs Carroll College (October 2015)

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football

Welcome to installment #27 in “The Whole Picture” in which I present the uncropped, higher resolution version of photos that SOURaiders.com have published. For prior editions click here. For higher resolution click on the photo before saving. As always, photos are best viewed on a big screen rather than a tiny phone screen.

Some of you may have found your way here through the link on souraiders.com. I have had several people email me asking questions about buying prints or about finding all of my photos for a certain sport.

The photos I post here are a small fraction of the photos I actually have. If you would like to print any of the photos on Ashland Daily Photo, you are welcome to do so at no charge. Be sure to click on the photo to get to the higher resolution size which will print with more quality. If you want to use them on the web (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), you are welcome to do so if you link back to traveljapanblog.com/ashland in the description of the photo. If you are using the photo in a newspaper or magazine, please credit “Al Case, Ashland Daily Photo”.

If you would like me to search through all of my photos and send you photos of the particular athlete you are looking for I charge a reasonable fee for the time it takes me to find all of those photos and to process them for you. I do not normally sell prints. I email you the high quality electronic files in .jpg format, and you can do the printing and framing yourself through a local or online service. My email is on this page or you can comment (leave a reply) to a recent blog entry to communicate.

Preseason NAIA #2 2016 SOU Raiders football team

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football #NAIAFootball @racetodaytona

The Raiders didn’t play today, although the NAIA opened the season a week before the NCAA. There were a few key games in the NAIA today though. #6 Grand View (Iowa) got crushed by #5 Baker (Kansas) 36-13. The NAIA coaches had them about even. Massey Ratings (which I’ve talked about many times before) had Baker winning. Baker doesn’t play any decent opponents for the rest of the season. Expect them to go undefeated in the regular season and then get beat in the playoffs (like SOU did last year) when they finally face a good team. Massey has Baker at #14, but the coaches will soon have them in the top three with home games throughout the postseason thanks to their weak schedule.

In the only Frontier Conference contest, Rocky Mountain beat Montana State-Northern 31-21. Either Montana State-Northern has gotten better (let’s hope–they were awful last year) or Rocky Mountain isn’t going to win many games in the Frontier Conference. Time will tell.

#1 Marian had their way with #10 Saint Xavier 56-10. Massey predicted a similar score. Finally, #25 Montana Western defeated #21 Dickinson State 29-13. Based on the coaches’ rankings, Dickinson State was supposed to win. Once again, Massey predicted better than the coaches. Massey predicted a 34-13 score in favor of Montana Western. Pretty damn close to the actual. Massey has Montana Western at #6 in the country. SOU will face Montana Western in September in Ashland and in late October in Montana.

Matt Retzlaff interfered with as he tries to catch a pass against Eastern Oregon University (September 2015)

@B_Kamerman @SOURaiders @SOU_Football @Matt_Retzlaff

The Raiders open their season next Saturday (9/3/16) at Eastern. Massey Ratings has the Raiders winning by 4. Massey has EOU at #10 in the country. The (more biased and less accurate) NAIA Football Coaches’ Poll has EOU at #26.

Aldrick Rosas in 2014 kicking for the SOU Raiders

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football @Titans

Aldrick Rosas was the Tennessee Titans kicker in the 4th quarter of their first 2016 preseason game yesterday. He was 1-1 in field goals, 1-1 in extra points, and his kickoffs were impressive as always.

#7 Jace Billingsley

@jacegable @EOUSports @SOURaiders @SOU_Football

Anyone who watched Jace Billingsley against the Raiders the past few seasons will not be surprised to see him make a play like this for the Detroit Lions. He nearly single-handedly beat the Raiders in 2013 and 2014.

In 2013 he led both teams with 161 yards receiving. He also threw for a TD on a trick play to win the game for EOU. In 2014, things got even more out of hand as he amassed 260 yards, mostly on the ground in another EOU upset over SOU. He was basically the only guy the Raiders couldn’t stop in 2014. After that game, the Raiders went on to win four straight and the national championship.

Massey predicts SOU’s 2016 football season

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football @Matt_Retzlaff @itsbronsenADER

It’s way too early for these rankings to mean anything, but the NAIA coaches have SOU at #2 in the country, and Massey has them at #3. Massey Ratings, as shown above, also has SOU winning all of their regular season games against NAIA opponents. At Eastern Oregon, for the very first game, is a tough draw. If SOU can start the season 3-1 or 4-0, then these preseason predictions are probably correct. Go Raiders!

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football @TannerTrosin

Despite never having won the Frontier Conference title outright, and never being the preseason favorite previously, Southern Oregon is the favorite for 2016. With early road games against Eastern Oregon University and Carroll College and no home games against Carroll College in 2016, it won’t be easy. More details here.
