Floater @ Rogue Theatre - Grants Pass
This Friday (June 1, 2012), Floater is returning to Southern Oregon for a show in Klamath Falls on the OIT campus. I’m hoping to head on over the Cascades and catch the gig. Hopefully, the lighting will be better than it is at their usual location of the Rogue Theatre. When will Floater come to Ashland again? It has been about a decade since their last performance in Ashland.
Slow Children at the Rogue Theatre
Slow Children, a band from Brookings (I think), opened for Floater. They sounded pretty good, sometimes sounding a lot like Floater in fact. Turns out there are numerous bands with this same name. They probably should have found a name that hasn’t already been taken. Anyway, they came out for Floater’s encore to play Helter Skelter as a six piece band. Check it out…
Floater w/ Slow Children at Rogue Theatre - November 18, 2011
I remembered to change the microphone to low sensitivity (under movie settings) on my Nikon D7000. That made the audio sound pretty good most of the time, but it still has a problem when a really heavy bass kicks in as you will hear (especially during the first song, My Burden, below) during parts of the following videos. I think I will purchase an external microphone and attenuator for next time to see if I can get better results.
I had to manually focus these videos as the lighting in the Rogue Theatre is really poor. Floater was pretty much playing in the dark.

I took the above photo immediately after the band was flashed, hence the expressions on their faces.
The end of this concert was strange, to say the least. The crowd became unruly so the stage was lined with security. The band wasn’t even visible much of the time thanks to the security blocking the view. Then, at 5 minutes to 10 p.m. (Roseburg’s curfew is 10) the sound was completely cut off as you can see in the video below.
A guy from The Zoo got up on stage and apologized for Roseburg’s laws, wasting the final 5 minutes Floater could have been legally playing. Everyone booed and began to leave. Then, at 5 minutes AFTER 10, they announced that Floater would come back on stage. Floater did get back on the stage to play the last half of “An Apology,” a fitting and ironic song title given the crap that Floater had to go through with the idiots in the crowd and the poor management of the venue/sound by The Zoo.

Floater @ The Zoo (Roseburg, Oregon)
Floater at The Zoo was a rather strange experience for many reasons. The stage is only a foot or so off the ground. That coupled with girls on shoulders and security trying to keep people off the stage meant you couldn’t always see much of the band.
The sound was also messed up. The band couldn’t hear themselves as the stage monitors didn’t work. Sometimes the mix was bad or instruments couldn’t be heard in the audience either.
I did finally figure out how to get decent audio on my D7000 (Low instead of Auto setting for video audio). However, the lighting was so poor (the audience was better lit than the band) that I couldn’t get the autofocus to work for video so after a minute or so in the following video I shifted to manual focus which worked much better.

I took a small road trip up I-5 for a couple hours to see Floater in Roseburg this past weekend. Floater played outdoors, on a stage built behind the old strip club which is now a bar called The Zoo.
