SOU volleyball to host first round playoff game

The opponent is not yet known, but the Raiders will likely be home Saturday night (11/22/14) to try to win their way to Sioux City, Iowa for the NAIA volleyball championships. Like the football team, the ladies are hoping to reverse their results from the prior weekend. Hopefully both teams will be smiling by the end of Saturday.

Although the results of yesterday’s game didn’t go according to plan, the Raiders did end up (barely) in the top eight in the final rankings which should give them a home game in the first round of the NAIA playoffs.

Tyler Cowger, and nine other wrestlers from Southern Oregon University, will be squaring off against Oregon State University tonight on the Pac-12 Network. I have DirecTV so I do not get the Pac-12 Network, but if you have Dish or another decent cable provider you may. The Beavers are looking for their 1,000th win. It will be interesting to see how many wrestlers from the Raiders’ team pull off upsets.

Eastern may look like a foe that the Raiders don’t have much to worry about, given their 3 losses, but they have one of the most difficult schedules in the NAIA. They are 5-3 against ranked teams. Give them an easy schedule like #1 Morningside (who has yet to face a ranked team), #3 Grand View (3-1 against ranked teams), or #5 Georgetown (1-1 against ranked teams), and they would likely be one of the top five teams in the country.

This will be a good one. The weather forecast isn’t great so be sure to get there early to sit under cover just in case.

The regular season will be wrapped up this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Raider Stadium against 16th-ranked Eastern Oregon. A home game or two should come to Ashland in the NAIA playoffs, but apparently there are no guarantees even for teams in the top four of the rankings.

As mentioned previously, and as Hensley Ratings predicted, #4 Faulkner was beaten this past weekend. This means SOU will likely be the #4 team heading into their final game against Eastern Oregon. While a victory over Eastern will be no easy feat (Hensley rates them as #3 in the country even though the Midwest-biased coaches have them way back at #21), the Raiders have beaten them on the road already this year so Southern will be the clear favorite this Saturday at home.

If SOU wins they will have home field advantage for their first NAIA playoff game. Should they win that game, if the NAIA has any sense of fairness or justice, they may also have a home game in the quarterfinals given their likely rise to #4 on Monday, November 10.

Hang in there Raiders. Just five more wins to go until you are National Champions.

Although the regular season is over, this season is far from over. The Cascade Conference and NAIA tournaments await.
