Keegan Lawrence slides into second

Freshman Keegan Lawrence won’t start college for more than four weeks, but he already has rushed for two touchdowns, and the Raiders first game is only half over. SOU leads Menlo 34-0.

Squadron of pelicans
I took today’s photo a week ago while we were at a friend’s ranch a few hours to the east of Ashland. You probably won’t see pelicans in Ashland, but they are common near Klamath Lake. This picture captures only about half of the total pelicans that made up this squadron. After gracefully circling around the property for more than 10 minutes they were scared off by a single hawk.

Hanser and Young led the Raiders today to a victory over UC Merced in three straight sets. They have two more games on Saturday before their first home games in Ashland next week.

Congratulations to Ashland native and SOU graduate Ty Burrell (AKA Phil Dunphy) for winning his second Emmy Award earlier this week for his Modern Family performance.
SOU Volleyball – Emma Gasman

Emma Gasman had 10 blocks in the Raiders’ victory against Westmont and 12 more in SOU’s win against Vanguard (ranked 18th in the nation). Her offense wasn’t bad either as she had 32 kills over the weekend.
The Raiders Volleyball Team will have their first home match next week (9/4/14).
On Sunday afternoon we headed back to Ashland from Beatty taking a different route than our normal Highway 140. This time we went along the Sprague River and through Chiloquin. Shortly after passing through Chiloquin our GPS had us on Road 1349 (AKA Sevenmile Road). The cows munching away while a fire burned a nearby seemed a bit surreal. I stopped the car for a second to take this cell phone pic.

Once upon a time, less than a year ago, my photos that showed up on souraiders.com were frequently too small to see and/or cropped in such a way that balls and heads were cut off. The new Raiders site is much improved, with bigger photos, and less cropping. The photo of today’s soccer game was cropped a bit. This is mostly my fault for not cropping it to fit on the SOU site correctly, but I wanted to give you the full photo in case you are interested.
