You may have seen this on the news (as I just saw it on the Today Show). We had a fire in town yesterday that burned 11 homes and a barn to the ground. Today’s pic was my view from home. Helicopters were flying water in from Emigrant Lake for hours.

The Cleetwood Cove section of Crater Lake was much bluer than the rest. I have no idea why. I was surprised the lake was so blue on a day with mostly gray clouds. Count on a temperature much cooler than you may expect at Crater Lake. We were in the 60s most of the day even though I was expecting 70s. If you are biking it around the lake, 60s are fine for uphill portions (of which there are many on Rim Drive), but things got a little cold on the downhill stretches, even with two shirts.
Ryan and I went for a bike ride around Crater Lake this past Saturday. It was a day filled with many highs and many lows. I’ll share some of those, and some photos, over the coming week.
The first “low” was that the road is much longer than I anticipated. A friend told me it takes 2.5 hours on a bike, but we did not find that to be the case. Crater Lake is about 5 miles across. Using the old equation of πr2 (pie r squared) yields a circumference much smaller than the road that goes around the crater, which we found out after the fact is 36 miles in length. You are not actually on the rim of the crater for very long or in many places on the “Rim Road.” Usually you are on the outside of the rim, with just occasional glimpses of the beauty of the lake.
A few days ago I took a friend to the Medford airport at 4:30 a.m. On my way home I took a bunch of pictures of Ashland just before the sun began to make its appearance. Today is the first of those images. I took it from Oak Street. This is the Ashland Railroad District. The building to the left is the A Street Marketplace which is 100 years old this year (built in 1910). For most of that time it was home to Oak Street Tank And Steel. In 2000 it was remodeled and turned into the current A Street Marketplace which has restaurants, a theater, and more.
This little, single-parent family has been living in my backyard recently. They aren’t very nervous around me either. I was only about 15 feet away when I took this.
A few nights back we had a really intense, and really short, lightning storm. The next morning I woke up to this view out the window.
As I walked out of the Ashland Recycling Center on Water Street the other day I had the above view. I like the empty box car over the mini tunnel. These same tracks eventually turn into this scene.
The Ashland Recycling Center is right next to a skateboard/bike park. I’m guessing that is where the biker in the tunnel is about to go.
The Deftones are a bit of a mixed bag in my eyes. I really love songs like “Digital Bath” and “Minerva.” When they mix in rap I lose interest. Unfortunately, the two songs I took videos of were not my favorites. I had a new SD card all queued up and ready to go for an encore I was hoping would included “Minerva.” They didn’t play it though and didn’t even really do an encore (although some band members briefly left the stage a couple songs before the end). So while it was a good show, I was a bit disappointed in the end.
This was actually the second time I have seen the Deftones in concert. Well, sort of.
The first time was at Ozzfest in 1999. I caught maybe one or two songs during the Deftones’ set. There were too many interesting things going on at Ozzfest to get caught up in the music until Slayer and Black Sabbath came on. I don’t remember exactly what I was doing during the Deftones, but I could have been watching Ozzy Karaoke, topless swings, or naked bull riding. The whole day is a blur now. I do remember seeing Slipknot, before anyone had heard of them. I’m pretty sure I completely missed Primus, System of a Down, Fear Factory, and Static-X. Too bad since now I like all four. And I clearly remember seeing Rob Zombie, a horrible show–almost as bad as when he played at Loud Park last year.
Before the Deftones began their set I went up to the Medford Armory’s “beer garden” on the second floor. There was a grand total of one beer to choose from, Coors Light. I decided to hang out upstairs for the first couple songs. I took a video from there of the second song they played, “Rocket Skates” off their new CD “Diamond Eyes” which you can view below.
Notice how much sweat Chino Moreno is covered with at this point in the show compared to yesterday’s photo later in the evening.
