Half of the conference games have been completed, and no one is running away with the 5A Midwestern League. Of the seven teams in the league, only Springfield is out of the running. The second half of the season will determine who makes it to state and where those games will be held. #8 Ashland faces #5 Churchill today @ 5 @ North Mountain Park.

After a doubleheader sweep of the previously #1-ranked team in the state, the 10-1 Grizzlies head into Tuesday afternoon’s matchup as the new #1. Game time is 5 p.m. at North Mountain Park on 4/12/16. Ashland High’s opponent will be 11-2 Marist. The winner will take over first place in the seven-team 5A Midwestern League.
Eagle Point is 5-0 against teams from Oregon and ranked #1 in the state. Ashland is 8-0 and ranked #5. Someone will have a blemish on their conference record after today’s game @ Eagle Point @ 5. The same two teams will play a doubleheader in Ashland on Saturday (4/9/16) beginning at 1.

After completion of 3-0 sweep at the Greenway Baseball Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, the Grizzlies record now stands at 5-0 on the young season. The wacky OSAA rankings had them at #5 in the state before today’s win. The RPI rankings (which include strength of schedule) have Ashland High School as the #1 team in the state. Rankings won’t mean anything until another dozen games have been played though.
Ashland plays at winless Springfield before their next home game on April 2.

Frequently you hear about in-state or inter-conference rivals, but the SOU-Marian rivalry is now turning into the national championship rivalry in the NAIA. SOU beat Goshen College tonight to advance to the national championship game against Marian on Tuesday. They did this without conference MVP Ashley Claussen. They did this with first-year coach Alex Carlson who is now 33-1, perhaps the best start to a coaching career in history.
SOU is 1-1 against Marian in national championship games. The Lady Raiders are going to tip the scales in SOU’s favor on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN3 or you can go to RedZone, Northwest, or Omars to watch. You may want to arrive early to avoid having to stand while you cheer the Raiders on to another national championship.
Ashland High School field (AKA Walter A. Phillips Field) condition (January 2016)
The final fundraising efforts to obtain a new multi-purpose turf field for Ashland High School are underway. The new field will be used year round for football, soccer, and PE classes. The current field is largely unusable most of the year. I was out there yesterday (when this photo was taken), and even though it hadn’t rained in over 24 hours, much of the field was swamp like.
There are two ways you can help.
1. Northwest Pizza is donating 10 percent of all sales beginning today to the Ashland School District’s turf field campaign. The other days are 2/10/16, 3/9/16, 4/6/16, 5/11/16, and 6/8/16.

The Cascade Collegiate Conference announced today that the Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team has been named the “Adidas Team of the Week” for November 30 – December 6.

SOU’s next home game (at Ashland High School–a much better venue for photography than old McNeal I might add) will be on 12/30/15.
