Last night was the fourth annual Raider Awards (AKA 2016 Black and Red All-Sports Awards) on the SOU campus. Always a fun event, it’s kind of sad to see the seniors go. Most of them will be walking this Saturday at 2016 Commencement.

Frequently you hear about in-state or inter-conference rivals, but the SOU-Marian rivalry is now turning into the national championship rivalry in the NAIA. SOU beat Goshen College tonight to advance to the national championship game against Marian on Tuesday. They did this without conference MVP Ashley Claussen. They did this with first-year coach Alex Carlson who is now 33-1, perhaps the best start to a coaching career in history.
SOU is 1-1 against Marian in national championship games. The Lady Raiders are going to tip the scales in SOU’s favor on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN3 or you can go to RedZone, Northwest, or Omars to watch. You may want to arrive early to avoid having to stand while you cheer the Raiders on to another national championship.

The Raiders won the Cascade Conference Tournament last night to go along with their regular season conference championship. Today the awards were announced, and, not surprisingly, Southern Oregon dominated them as well. Ashley Claussen won Player of the Year, Toria Bradford is the Defensive Player of the Year, Courtney Setzer is Freshman Player of the Year, and Alex Carlson is Coach of the Year. Autumn Durand and Carly Meister made the All-Conference Team (and could have each been Player of the Year as well were it not for Ashley). More details here.

The SOU women’s basketball team’s winning ways, combined with a couple key upsets, could earn them a #1 seed in the national tournament. The Raiders ended the regular season with a 26-1 record.
Saint Xavier, ranked #1 before tonight, dropped their regular season finale to #12 Stritch in OT on the road. They will likely fall to somewhere between #3 and #5 in the rankings.
Marian, ranked #3 before last night, dropped their final two games of the regular season. They lost to a 5-23 team on the road before losing their home finale tonight. They will likely drop out of the top eight with those losses.
#6 SOU will move up at least one spot in the rankings. If they don’t move ahead of Saint Xavier they will need to sweep the conference playoffs at home and hope for another upset of a higher ranked team to crack the top four and receive a #1 seed in the national tournament.

After New Year’s Eve’s victories over Warner Pacific put both SOU teams into first place all by themselves, the Raiders will now hit the road and not play again in Ashland until January 23. Tonight’s games are in Klamath Falls against always tough Oregon Tech.
While the men have been champions of eking out victories by the narrowest of margins, the women have dominated their opponents. The transitive property doesn’t work very well for sports forecasting, but the women crushed Warner Pacific who beat the Owls in Klamath Falls so another victory seems very possible tonight.
BTW, new rankings come out later today. If the Lady Raiders aren’t in the top ten then the voting coaches haven’t been watching these games.

Even though the Raiders have been picked to come in second in the conference, SOU’s Carly Meister is the preseason favorite for conference MVP.
Action begins on October 29 in the Riehm Arena’s final game before the demolition team blasts the place to rubble.

Southern Oregon was the only team in the CCC who had three players on the all-conference women’s basketball team the league announced today. Junior Carly Meister, senior Alexi Smith, and junior Ashley Claussen made the first team. Senior Kristen Schoenherr received honorable mention.
Corban’s Tara Van Weerduizen, #33 pictured here, won the MVP award.
