This was my first July 4 in Ashland in seven years, and it was not as interesting as this photo may seem to indicate.

No parade today thanks to Covid-19. This would have been my first Fourth of July parade in Ashland since 2015. Hopefully the parade is back in full force next year and I, hopefully, won’t be in the country to see it.

Annual Ashland 4th of July Run Goes Virtual

ashland 4th of july run

Ashland’s 4th of July run

“In order to abide by the Governor’s restrictions and guidelines surrounding COVID-19, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce made the decision to cancel the traditional Ashland 4th of July parade, park and fireworks festivities for 2020. Consequently, the 44th Annual 4th of July Run has been reimagined and in the spirit of community and health, Ashland Parks and Recreation will host a virtual run at no charge.

Runners of all abilities are encouraged to run or walk a 10K, 5K or 1-mile run sometime between July 1 and July 4, 2020. Historically, the run is a 10K or a 2-mile race; however, the virtual run will include the staple 5K run and the 1-mile run will replace the 2-mile event.

Following your solo run, email your stats to the Race Director by noon on July 5, 2020. The Director will collect all times and provide results by overall finish and age groups. Complete information on how to submit your virtual information, and view results, at ashland.or.us/JulyRun. Results will also be posted on the event Facebook page at Facebook.com/AshlandJuly4thRun. Be sure to share your running experience and photos! “Sharing is more important now than ever as we all practice physical distancing, but try to stay connected in our communities,” stated Rachel Dials, Recreation Superintendent for Ashland Parks and Recreation. “We also have the Ashland Parks and Recreation Facebook and Instagram pages for people to engage on.” For fun, alternative ways to celebrate Ashland’s civic pride this year, visit the Ashland Chamber Facebook page @AshlandChamberOregon.

Things to remember about the virtual run:
No early registration
No entry fee
No awards
No t-shirt (The 2020 design by Jen Hickenlooper, will be re-purposed for the 2021 Race)”

With parameters like the above, I feel like I can run (my first race in the past 30 years) with a 10k time of about 25 minutes. 😉
