Second half of conference play

Tiani Bradford

@SOURaiders @souwbb @Tiani_Bradford

SOU’s basketball teams have now played each team in the Cascade Conference once. They will play them all again before the regular season is over.

Despite Saturday’s loss to Eastern Oregon University, the 16-1 women’s team is in a good position. They will face second place EOU and third place OIT at home in the second half. Massey has them as an 81-100% favorite in each of their remaining, regular-season games. Massey has them at #8, while the coaches have the Lady Raiders at #11. If they can win their final 10 games, and win the conference tournament (which will be in Ashland if they continue winning), they should have no problem getting back into the coaches’ top 8. A final ranking between four and eight means a #2 seeding in the national tournament. A #1 seeding (by virtue of a final ranking in the coaches’ poll between one and four) is unlikely after the loss to EOU.

The men will need a better second half to win the conference, and it won’t be easy. They are currently in second place, but they must face Northwest Christian, Corban, and Warner Pacific on the road in the second half. At least they get Oregon Tech at home. Still, it will be difficult to make it through the conference with fewer than 4 or 5 losses.

Both teams will be at home (Ashland High School) this coming Saturday and Sunday.

Raider domination

The Raiders continued their winning ways tonight against College of Idaho. They are now 16-0. The only team that may have a decent chance of stopping them is Eastern Oregon University in La Grande on Saturday night. A win for the Raiders on 1/16/16, and what became a possibility after the Warner Pacific blowout a couple weeks ago will become a probability, a 27-0 regular season.

No conference team has played the Raiders very tough yet, with only EOU remaining. The Raiders will get Oregon Tech and EOU at home during the second half of the regular season.

SOU women’s basketball up to #8 in new poll

The new coaches poll has the last undefeated team in the #8 spot (up from #12 last week).

Here is where unbiased Massey Ratings have the 15-0 Raiders, #6:

Massey Ratings as of 1/12/16

Massey Ratings as of 1/12/16

A few things to note:

– Massey shows the Raiders with one loss since Massey counted the exhibition game against San Jose State (an NCAA D-I opponent).
– The Raiders need to get to a top four spot in the coaches poll by the middle of March in order to be one of the four #1 seeds in the national tournament. (12 more wins should get them there.)
– SOU’s strength of schedule (SoS) isn’t nearly as high as the other top 10 teams according to Massey. Concordia’s departure to NCAA D2 (and being replaced by 0-8 Walla Walla and 1-7 Multnomah in the Cascade Conference) isn’t helping.

Raider women go to 15-0 with another blowout win

Today’s final score was 115-40 over Walla Walla. Next weekend the Raiders travel to College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon. Massey thinks the Eastern Oregon University game will be the last decent chance a team has to beat Southern Oregon in the regular season. Even so, Massey gives SOU a 66% chance of victory and predicts a win for the Raiders by 5 points.

I began hinting about it after the blowout victory over previously unbeaten Warner Pacific. The team is probably forbidden from talking or thinking about it at this point in the season. However, Massey not only picks football; they also pick women’s basketball (and a bunch of other things).

Massey says the SOU women’s basketball team isn’t going to lose another game this regular season.

The #12 Raiders continued their winning ways this evening over #28 Oregon Tech. Why the coaches have SOU at #12, with only one other undefeated team (#1 Saint Xavier), is a mystery. The other question, which begins to loom large now that SOU has slaughtered 10-2 #24 Warner Pacific and beaten OIT on the road, is will the Raiders finish the regular season without a loss?

@SOURaiders @souwbb @ADurand25 @CarlyMeister34

After New Year’s Eve’s victories over Warner Pacific put both SOU teams into first place all by themselves, the Raiders will now hit the road and not play again in Ashland until January 23. Tonight’s games are in Klamath Falls against always tough Oregon Tech.

While the men have been champions of eking out victories by the narrowest of margins, the women have dominated their opponents. The transitive property doesn’t work very well for sports forecasting, but the women crushed Warner Pacific who beat the Owls in Klamath Falls so another victory seems very possible tonight.

BTW, new rankings come out later today. If the Lady Raiders aren’t in the top ten then the voting coaches haven’t been watching these games.

Besides being the only unbeaten team in the conference, the SOU women’s basketball team is also winning their games by incredible margins. They win by an average of 37 points! 16 points was the margin of victory in their closest conference affair. The next four games are on the road, including 5-1 Oregon Tech and 5-1 Eastern Oregon. If they can win those two games then we can start talking about even crazy stuff, like a 27-0 regular season.
