Raiders stuck at #9

As predicted, SOU remained at #9 in the latest NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll (despite being #2 in rankings that look at schedule strength). A victory at Rocky Mountain this weekend will likely cause movement to #8 or #7 as the Raiders can move past the loser of the Doane – Morningside game and Reinhardt could lose to Faulkner on the road.

The Raiders continued to rack up penalties and lose the turnover battle in yesterday’s game. SOU was penalized for 115 yards, nearly twice the College of Idaho total. The Raiders were also -3 in turnovers. If they can get these parts of their game fixed, they can win out. The two loses were caused by penalties and turnovers as well.
One potential cause of some of the penalty calls against the Raiders late in the game may have had to do with this earlier call. The ruling on the field was that Jordan Suell made this 44-yard reception. From these photos, it’s clear that the call was correct. However, the DB, Carter, ran to the bench saying he caught the ball. The College of Idaho coaches were furious with the officials and gave them an earful about this “blown” call (that led to 7 points for the Raiders). Maybe the officials were trying to even things out later? I don’t know, but they got this call correct. If they hadn’t, I don’t think Southern Oregon may have been able to win with a -4 turnover margin.

USF fell apart in the second half of yesterday’s game with Marian. That caused them to drop a couple of places in Massey Ratings. The NAIA coaches will likely do something similar, paving the way for Marian and Baker to receive home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Neither Marian or Baker have an even halfway decent opponent on their remaining schedules. SOU will still be #9 in Monday’s coaches poll. USF will likely drop to #5.

SOU’s soccer teams are on the road this weekend. They will return to playing in Ashland on October 7.
Raiders up to #3 in new Massey Ratings
With the Raiders big road win yesterday in Montana, Massey has bumped Southern Oregon up in the computer rankings to #3. SOU will play Massey’s #12, #11, and #9 over the next three weeks. Two of those games are at home in Ashland. Massey has the Raiders as at least 7 point favorites in each contest.
The coaches’ poll comes out tomorrow. Don’t look for any major changes in the top nine from the coaches. The coaches don’t tend to move teams up unless the team in front of them lost. It will be interesting to see what they do with #2 Morningside. The Raiders were punished in the poll for losing to NCAA DI UC Davis, even though the Raiders accumulated more yards than Davis. Yesterday Morningside lost to an NCAA DIII team (Wisconsin-Whitewater) by two touchdowns. Massey says that UC Davis could beat Wisconsin-Whitewater by a touchdown. Will the coaches drop Morningside as much as they dropped the Raiders? I doubt it. Look for Morningside to slip barely out of the top five and the Raiders to still be at #9.
