Volleyball earned SOU 73 points with a 5th place finish
Unfortunately, SOU has little chance of ever winning the NAIA Directors’ Cup for an entire year given the way the points are calculated. Standings are based on a school’s best 13 teams. The points are not weighted for things like number of sports or number of teams competing in a given sport. Therefore, schools with more teams and more teams in lower-participation sports (golf, tennis, swimming, cheer, dance, etc.) will score higher when all is said and done. If proper weighting was done (more points for higher-participation sports like softball and volleyball–there are over 220 volleyball teams in the NAIA but only 29 schools participating in swimming so if a school comes in 5th place in volleyball (like SOU did) they’ll score only half as many points as a school that comes in 5th place in both men’s and women’s swimming) and final points were divided by the number of teams that competed, Southern Oregon probably would have come in at #1 in each of the past four or five years. No team that has ranked higher than SOU in the final standings has only 13 teams (like SOU does). Most have 17 or more teams so they get to drop their lowest four or more teams a year. Last year’s winner, for instance, had 17 teams. The runner up had 22 teams!

2018 Southern Oregon University Volleyball Team

The SOU volleyball team has been named the “Under Armour Team of the Week” the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday. The Raiders reached the national quarterfinals for the first time in program history before being eliminated by the eventual national champion Park University. The 2018 team finished with their most wins (29-5) since 1993 and the highest win percentage (.853) in team history. Massey has Southern Oregon at #7 (of over 220 teams) in their final ratings.

The Raiders beat Rocky Mountain today to earn a spot in the final eight for the first time ever. Southern Oregon will play against #2-ranked Park tonight with the winner advancing to the final four.
Massey was right, Raiders are #1 in their pool

As I mentioned early last week, Southern Oregon came into their pool as the #2 team according to the coaches but as the #1 team according to Massey Ratings. Today the Raiders proved Massey correct despite a 5-set loss to Viterbo. SOU moves forward to the final 16 as the #1 team in their pool where they may be playing against Marian next–yes, the very same Marian that SOU has lots of history with in football, women’s basketball, and softball. Massey had the Raiders at #8 and Marian at #25 before today’s win. If not Marian, then Rocky Mountain will be the next opponent.

SOU swept through their second opponent in as many days this afternoon in Iowa. Jamestown, who Southern Oregon beat yesterday, upset #7 Viterbo leaving SOU as the only undefeated team in the pool. The Raiders will face Viterbo at 2 p.m. PST Thursday.
The four Cascade Conference teams (SOU, EOU, College of Idaho, and Corban) in the final 32 teams are a combined 7-0 in pool play. It’s very possible all four will advance to the final 16.
SOU blows past Jamestown, a win away from Sweet 16

The Raiders won over Jamestown in three straight sets this afternoon. A win over St. Xavier (Wednesday at 2 p.m. PST) will mean Southern Oregon moves on to single-elimination bracketed play Friday. If they don’t succeed against St. Xavier, the Raiders will still be able to advance with a win over Viterbro (who beat St. Xavier today) on Thursday.
