The new football rankings have been released, and they look almost identical to my prediction. Fortunately, SOU is in the top eight so a win at Eastern Oregon this Saturday will get them a home playoff game. Unfortunately, only two other teams ahead of the Raiders in the rankings have difficult matchups this weekend. Doane will likely drop out of the top eight. Montana Tech could if they lose at home to Western Montana. Therefore, it will likely take at least two upsets in the first round of the playoffs for the Raiders to earn more than one home playoff game.

Yesterday’s results were the best for the Grizzlies since the 2009 team took 3rd in Oregon. Ashland was the victim of the toughest matchup schedule of any team at the tournament. OSAA doesn’t adjust the brackets round by round, even after the first round (in which almost an entire week passes), so that the lowest seeded team plays the top seed, etc. Therefore, Ashland had to face the #2 seed and the #1 seed in their only two losses of the tournament. On the other hand, La Salle Prep (who won the same number of matches as Ashland during the year), came in second in the tournament by beating the #13 and #9 seeded teams before losing to #3-seeded Summit in the finals.
I know traditions are hard to break, but why not have each of the top teams play each of the other top teams over the two days? Seems much more fair to determine the final placements than the current system. All the teams are there sitting around waiting to play anyway.

When Russian Circles came on my Pandora station a few minutes ago, I realized that I still hadn’t processed (or even looked at) my X Suns photos from last month at Club 66. Great band, wonderful performance, no awful vocals to foul things up. Hopefully they keep it that way. BTW, that’s 10 suns, as in the Roman numeral X.

This Saturday’s game wasn’t supposed to be the Big Game of the season. The Carroll game or maybe the final game at Eastern Oregon would have seemed to have been the Big Game before the season began. However, things aren’t working out that way. Montana Tech has been outstanding. They beat Carroll (twice!) and head into this Saturday’s game with the same record as the Raiders (7-1). The winner will likely win the conference and receive an automatic bid to the NAIA football playoffs. The loser will have to win their final game and merely hope to make the post season.
