Lost Creek Reservoir
On the way home from our Crater Lake field trip I was in the passenger seat. I took this picture out of the window while traveling at 60+ MPH on Highway 62. This body of water is known as Lost Creek Lake.

Crater Lake in May
For some, unknown reason our guide never took us to the lake. I think most of the kids didn’t even see Crater Lake on this Crater Lake field trip. I wasn’t going to miss it though. When you have traveled to one of the Top 10 Natural Wonders of the World you may as well look at it.
Crater Lake was in fine form on this day.
Klamath Basin from Crater Lake
For some unknown reason our showshoe guide took us away from Crater Lake. Sure the views were still fantastic, like the one above of the Klamath Basin, but I hadn’t seen Crater Lake in nearly ten years. I had never seen it with snow or with the wicked, cool blue and cloudy sky that was now appearing.
I was dying inside, wanting to break from my field trip group to see the lake. But I performed my fatherly and chaperone duties and stuck with the group. I hoped the weather wouldn’t change before getting to the lake. Stay tuned to see if it did…
Snowshoeing at Crater Lake
After arriving at Crater Lake it appeared my luck had not changed. Once again, I could not see the lake. I was there for a snowshoeing experience with my daughter’s class as a field trip. As we began snowshoeing the thick clouds started to break up.
Apparently the snow isn’t all gone from this area until July. The above photo was taken on May 19, 2009, and there was close to 10 feet of snow under foot. The temperature in Ashland the day before hit 90.
Above Rogue River Gorge
At this point in the day I was very hopeful that the scenery at Crater Lake would be spectacular as we had some blue sky. The last two times I went to Crater Lake were disappointing as I didn’t get to see the lake due to poor weather conditions.
Rogue River Gorge
On our way to Crater Lake we stopped at the Rogue River Gorge. I’ve visited this location three or four times before, but the water was coming through at a far more ferocious rate than I have previously witnessed.
Walker Elementary School Playground
Last month I went on a field trip with my daughter’s class to Crater Lake. The weather was strange all day. This is what it looked like when we arrived at Walker Elementary School at 7:30 in the morning.

Another angle on Castle Lake
Today’s entry will wrap up the Chico trip. After departing Castle Lake we continued north on I-5.
We stopped in Yreka for lunch at Pat’s BBQ Express. I haven’t eaten often in Yreka simply because it is less than an hour from Ashland so if I’m hungry in Yreka I usually just press for home. I will definitely eat in Yreka more often now that I’ve experienced Pat’s BBQ. It was fantastic. I had pulled pork spaghetti with garlic bread. It was all very mouth watering. The smoker the pork came from was right out front giving off wonderful smells from the dinner meat.
Castle Lake
My traveling companion had never been to Castle Lake before. Since it’s only about 10 miles off of I-5 I decided to take him there. I had no idea how beautiful it was going to be, never having been there in May before. Chico was about 90 degrees so I wasn’t expecting snow and ice on Castle Lake. The temperature was nice at almost 70 degrees, but the view was a winter one.
Amazingly enough, we were the only ones there enjoying the above scenery. I’ll share one more picture of Castle Lake with you tomorrow. To get to Castle Lake, follow the signs to Lake Siskiyou and just before you get there you’ll see one pointing to the left saying “Castle Lake 8 miles.”
Another angle on Mt. Shasta
I’ve shown you pictures of Mt. Shasta from the east, north, west, and from on the mountain itself in prior entries. This photograph is from the South (on I-5). Unfortunately, the clouds covered the top. I love driving north on I-5 and viewing Mt. Shasta once past Redding.
