Grace Lenthe wins top honor
Grace Lenthe – 2015 Midwestern League softball player of the year
Both the Ashland High School baseball and softball teams had similar seasons with good starts and poor finishes. The softball team went 10-3 before finishing the season 4-10. They came in 5th place in the 7-team conference. All-conference selections are difficult to come by in a 7-team league, but Grace Lenthe did one better. She won player of the year, an amazing accomplishment for someone on a team looking up at four other teams in the standings. Grace hit over .500 with a slugging percentage over .800 for the year.

More than seven years ago I remember 9 or 10-year old Grace (who I had never before met) walking up to me before our first practice and saying something like, “Hey Al, let’s play catch!” I have been a fan of Miss Lenthe ever since.
Tomorrow the AHS softball team plays at North Mountain Park at 5 p.m. (as does the baseball team). The forecast is for rain.

AHS baseball today

Game time is 5 p.m. at North Mountain Park. After a 5-1 start to the season outside of league play, today’s game against Springfield will be the first 5A-3 Midwestern League game for the Grizzlies.

According to the Munich Cowboys’ Facebook page, Ryan Retzlaff has been signed to play for them. The German Football League (GFL) allows up to six non-EU players per team, but only two can be on the field at any single point in time. This is somewhat similar to how Japan and Korea restrict the number of foreign players on their professional baseball rosters.

Ashland High School Baseball Coach Mike Kenask
Jeremy Guthrie, AHS alum and pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, will be at the AHS football stadium on Tuesday, March 24 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. to kick off the fundraising for the turf field project. He’ll address the crowd, sign autographs, and be available for photos at the event. Guthrie has generously donated $650,000 toward a turf field at AHS. The field will be used for home football and soccer games, PE classes, and community use. It will be a tremendous enhancement to Ashland High School programs.

Thanks, in large part, to a heroic effort from Tejas this past Wednesday night, the Grizzlies will be playing again today in Woodburn. The AHS goalie held Liberty scoreless through regulation and two OTs. To top it off, he block two of their first four penalty kicks to send Ashland on to the next round of the Oregon state playoffs.
