Ashland Halloween Parade 2008

Thousands participate in the afternoon parade that descends on the downtown plaza area of town. The merchants give out candy to trick or treaters. If you want a break from the masses of people just follow the sign to the right and you’ll be in Lithia Park which looks really good this time of year.

Lithia Park’s Japanese Gardens

I haven’t made it down to Lithia Park this October, which is a shame since I’m sure it is gorgeous right now. I took the above photograph last October (on the 14th to be exact) in the Japanese Gardens. You can see some more pictures from that day here.

We have a couple of Japanese Maples in our backyard that turn colors later than all other Japanese Maples in town. One of our Japanese Maples goes the last week of October and the other doesn’t give up its green until about November 10th.

Ashland Creek in Lithia Park

Photo taken in August of 2008.

Almost 10 years ago the Ashland Creek flooded downtown Ashland. The creek is pretty tame in August. I find it more exciting during a rainstorm or on a warm day in spring when the snow is melting quickly.

Tai Chi?

Photo taken in August 2008

I thought some people were doing Tai Chi in Lithia Park (as that is a very common sight). However, when they broke out a sword I had to wonder whether it was actually something else.

Automobile from 1949 spotted in Lithia Park

Ever heard of Lithia Motors? Probably not unless you live in the Western part of the USA where there are over 100 Lithia auto dealerships. The first one started right here. The CEO lives down the hill from me. The “Lithia” in Lithia Motors comes from guess where? That’s right, Lithia Park.

Lithia Park bandshell

The city band plays under the bandshell on Thursday nights in the summer. Sometimes there are other events here like “Ballet in the Park,” other concerts, and high school graduation. SOU’s graduation ceremony took place here until 2002.

Japanese Garden Lithia Park

Summer isn’t the best time to visit Lithia Park’s Japanese Gardens (Fall or Spring have more color), but if it’s shape you’re looking for, instead of variety of colors, then Summer is OK too.

I love Ashland’s homes. Each is so unique. The settings can be wonderful too.
