There is no snow in the forecast for Daytona, Florida next week. Instead, temperatures are likely to be in the 70s most of the time, occasionally dipping down into the 60s at night. Brrrrrr….

If you are in or near Ashland, come on down to RedZone today after 4:30 p.m. for Howard’s Happy Hour. Coach Craig Howard, and other members of the Raider coaching staff, will be available to chat and answer questions about SOU’s football season.

#9 Oshay Dunmore hits Brett Buchmann, ultimately forcing a fumble that resulted in a touchback call

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football @racetodaytona #RaceToDaytona #NAIAFootball #RoadToDaytona

Today’s photo features an odd play in the Morningside game. The ruling had the potential to cost the Raiders the game, but things worked out for SOU in such a way that the call didn’t ultimately matter. BTW, I have a series of five photos that clearly show that #1, Buchmann did catch the ball and #2, he did fumble the ball on the 13-yard line. After that the official scorer became as confused as the refs. Here is how the scorer called the play:

“GIDDENS, Thomas punt 49 yards to the MC18, Dvorak, Weslee return 0 yards to the MC18, fumble forced by JONES, Karringt, fumble by Dvorak, Weslee recovered by MC James, Taylor at MC0, touchback.”

The scorer got the players wrong. It was Buchmann and Dunmore, not Dvorak and Jones. The ball was not recovered by James. The ball went through the back of the end zone after both teams touched it.

Did the refs get the call correct? I still don’t know. I went through the official rule book and could not find an example of a punt being fumbled and then going through the end zone unrecovered. I did find a line that says “When in question, it is a touchback, not a safety.” so I guess one could say the refs were correct based on that.

But this ruling seems unfair given what transpired. It also leaves open the possibility of plays that could “game” the rule book. For instance, a punt returner who catches the ball on the 1-yard line and then sees that he can’t make it to the 20 could just fumble the ball out the back of the end zone to indirectly forward the ball 19 yards via a touchback. Is that fair? I don’t think so.

…and the wait will be over.

Note that this year’s NAIA Football Championship Game is on ESPN3. Last year it was ESPNU. Last year I was able to record the game as ESPNU is a regular channel on most cable and satellite packages (like DirecTV). This year you will likely need to stream it online if you can’t go to Daytona. Unfortunately, I will be in Mexico so I won’t even be able to stream it on ESPN3.

If in Ashland, you can watch it at RedZone, Northwest Pizza, Omars, or Oaktree. For a longer list, including places outside Ashland, click here.

New NAIA Men’s Basketball Rankings

Details on the men’s and women’s rankings for SOU can be found here.

I take back my comments from last week about how computer rankings and the coaches’ poll are fairly close. This week they aren’t close at all. Carroll College doesn’t seem to be keeping a history of the computer rankings, but while last week’s were similar, this week’s are not. Sagarin has Corban at #6, Northwest Christian at #7, and SOU at #8. This may seem odd given that SOU just beat Corban and Northwest Christian, but it actually makes sense given how close the games were and the fact that the Raiders were at home.

The coaches have SOU at #10 and Corban and NCU not even in the top 25.

Massey predicts what???

Isiah Carter puts a stop to likely 2015 NAIA Player of the Year Ryan Kasdorf

@SOURaiders @SOU_Football @CarterTheGr8_

Those following along have noticed that I’ve been a fan of Massey Ratings. I mean, the results speak for themselves. Massey is 6-0 in the last two rounds of the 2015 NAIA FCS. What about the coaches? The coaches are 2-4. Obviously, Massey does a better job with rankings than the coaches. Let’s hope the NAIA switches its playoff selection and playoff home field choosing to an objective ranking system at some point in the near future.

That said, I don’t know what Massey has been smoking in coming up with its prediction for the championship in Daytona on 12/19/15. Marian by 13.5? Sure, I expected Massey to pick Marian given that Massey has Marian at #1 and SOU barely beat Morningside, but 13.5 points??? I’m guessing that Massey is using the transitive property and computing that since Montana Tech beat SOU, St. Francis beat Montana Tech, and Marian beat St. Francis, then it follows that Marian will easily beat SOU. But one of several plays could have gone differently in the Montana Tech game resulting in an SOU win. In addition, without the turnovers in the Morningside game, the Raiders would have blown out the Mustangs. Massey also isn’t considering last year’s drubbing SOU gave Marian in Daytona. Maybe Massey has “revenge” as a factor in the rankings.

13.5 points though??? SOU has lost by 13.5 points or more exactly one time (more than 2 years ago!) in its last 49 games. One time! And that was to a #3 ranked, six-time national champion Carroll College team on the road.

In any event, if any Marian fans want to place a wager on the game and are willing to give me SOU and 13.5 points, please contact me at your earliest convenience. I predict Massey will go 6-1 for the final three rounds.

sou marian

P.S. Massey was, once again, correct. Marian won by 17, pretty close to Massey’s prediction.
