Frozen Oregon Shakespeare Festival

Lower Duck Pond (2008)

All the tourists are long gone on an early, frozen morning at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The lower duck pond in Lithia Park is completely frozen over and snow has fallen overnight.

Ashland Middle School Play

Ashland is perhaps best known for its theatrical arts. Besides the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, there are countless plays going on in and around town. On most nights you have your choice of between 3 and 8 or so different plays to see. Not bad for a town of just over 20,000 people.

With all of these professional actors, directors, etc. in town it’s no surprise that the schools have amazing drama programs. The middle school plays are as good or better than high school plays elsewhere. The high school plays are as good or better than university plays elsewhere. And the SOU plays are better than professional plays elsewhere.

Unfortunately, I can’t stand plays. So I only go when I have to. Unfortunately, that is very often as my son loves to attend and participate in them.

The above photo is from the curtain call of Ashland Middle School’s rendition of “This is a Test.” They also performed “Small Actors” on the same night a few weeks back.

Ashland Halloween Parade 2008

Thousands participate in the afternoon parade that descends on the downtown plaza area of town. The merchants give out candy to trick or treaters. If you want a break from the masses of people just follow the sign to the right and you’ll be in Lithia Park which looks really good this time of year.

The New Theatre

The New Theatre at Oregon Shakespeare Festival isn’t all that new anymore. I think it has now been around for six years, but it is still called The New Theatre. One of these days someone will buy the naming rights or they will name it after someone I suppose.

Pioneer Street

Lots of signs in this one. We’ve got heraldic banners, the last phone booth in town, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, a right turn on Pioneer gets you to OSF, and a place to park (if you are really lucky or are willing to pay). You can also get to my house by taking a right here (and then a left, right, right, and left).
