Amon Amarth in Portland
I took a little trip up north on Tuesday to see a Swedish band I had previously seen in Sweden in 2008. If you are interested (I know most of you probably are not) then check out the photos and video I will post here.
The venue was the Wonder Ballroom, located right in the middle of a residential neighborhood–very strange. The building was cool, though, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Breakfast decisions
I have been in Eugene, Oregon the past couple days for the Thanksgiving holiday. Voodoo Doughnut, of Portland, Oregon, now has a shop in Eugene too. We headed there for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving only to find them closed until noon. So we came back after lunch for dessert.
Hotel Modera
Let’s wrap up Portland week with a look at the lobby of the hotel we stayed at, the Hotel Modera. The hotel was very nice. It was clean and extremely quiet. I can’t remember the last time I’ve stayed somewhere in which I never heard a peep once inside my room. We never heard anything from neighbors, traffic, etc. It probably helped that we were on the top floor in a corner room, but it may be the same in all the rooms.
The room was something like $130 a night. Parking was $20 a night. We only pulled the car out once in three days as you can get to most things on the nearby, free street car system and then not have to worry about parking once you get to your destination.

The USS Blueback (SS-581)
I took the above photograph from inside OMSI. The submarine is the USS Blueback. We took a tour of it many years ago when visiting OMSI so we didn’t feel the need to explore its insides this go around. The Marquam Bridge also makes an appearance in today’s picture.
Electric car charging station
On our way into OMSI we noticed two charging station parking spaces. The last time I saw one of these was at Costco in San Jose, California in the 1990s. Never once was a car charging itself in those prime parking places at Costco. However, on our way out of OMSI we did see the above car charging.
OMSI
OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) is a great place to spend the day. See my other post for a tip on how to get in for free.
Pioneer Place
We loved the free, Portland street car system. We could hop on and off anywhere. When it’s raining a popular place to jump off is Pioneer Place. I’m not into frou-frou shopping myself, but a book on the upper level with this view isn’t a bad way to burn an hour while those in your party do their thing.
Wicked
The main reason we went to Portland was to see Wicked. Photography wasn’t allowed so these are the only two shots I took, before the show started.
House of Louie
We were starving, getting rained heavily on, and asked only one person what the best Chinese food in town was. She pointed us to House of Louie across the street. We were disappointed. The food was mediocre at best.
We made up for it the next day with a great meal at Mother’s.
