Best team in the Cascade Conference

Besides being the only unbeaten team in the conference, the SOU women’s basketball team is also winning their games by incredible margins. They win by an average of 37 points! 16 points was the margin of victory in their closest conference affair. The next four games are on the road, including 5-1 Oregon Tech and 5-1 Eastern Oregon. If they can win those two games then we can start talking about even crazy stuff, like a 27-0 regular season.

Some of you may have found your way here through the link on souraiders.com. I have had several people email me asking questions about buying prints or about finding all of my photos for a certain sport.

The photos I post here are a small fraction of the photos I actually have. If you would like to print any of the photos on this blog, you are welcome to do so at no charge. Be sure to click on the photo to get to the higher resolution size which will print with more quality. If you want to use them on the web (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), you are welcome to do so if you link back to traveljapanblog.com/ashland in the description of the photo. If you are using the photo in a newspaper or magazine, please credit “Al Case, Ashland Daily Photo”.

If you would like me to search through all of my photos and send you photos of the particular athlete you are looking for I charge a reasonable fee for the time it takes me to find all of those photos and to process them for you. I do not normally sell prints. I email you the high quality electronic files in .jpg format, and you can do the printing and framing yourself through a local or online service. My email is on this page or you can comment (leave a reply) to a blog entry to communicate.

Huge games tonight

Warner Pacific proved that they have teams to be reckoned with via their sweep of Oregon Tech last night in Klamath Falls. Both of the Owls’ teams are tough, especially at home, but WPC earned Ws against them. Tonight it’s the Raiders’ turn. In a very unusual situation, all four teams are undefeated in conference play at 5-0. Only the winners of each game will enter 2016 in first place.

Game times are 5:30 and 7:30 at Ashland High School.

Basketball resumes in Ashland

sou men's basketball team

@SOURaiders @souwbb @Tay_Nuttall_

SOU men’s and women’s basketball starts up again tomorrow. They’ve been off for more than a week which is unusual. The games are Wednesday (12/30/15 vs. Multnomah) and Thursday (12/31/15 vs. Warner Pacific) at Ashland High School with the women tipping off at 5:30 each evening followed by the men at about 7:30. The New Year’s Eve games will be a battle for first place in the conference for both the men and the women. Both SOU teams currently sit in a tie for first place with also undefeated Warner Pacific.

No one answered my question, but the answer to “What do these numbers (9, 1, 3, 7, 10, 2, 1) mean?” is, “the rankings of the teams the Raiders beat in the playoffs over the past two years”. A streak of seven consecutive, playoff victories over top 10 teams (five of the games on the road) is impressive to say the least. Four of those victories came over teams in the top 3 (all on the road). Amazing.

The Raiders finished up as #2 in the final NAIA football rankings for 2015. Hopefully the Raiders beat teams ranked something like 16, 11, 7, and 5 in 2016’s playoffs. Why? Because that means a #1 ranking heading into them.

The coaches’ poll has three Frontier Conference teams in the top 25. Massey’s final rankings has seven Frontier Conference teams in the top 25. The coaches still aren’t paying attention to Massey despite Massey’s perfect record in predicting the final three rounds of the playoffs (compared to the coaches’, less than a coin flip, 3-4 record).

The Raiders came up short of another national championship in 2015, but they were the ones on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 Plays of the Day.

Count on SOU to be even better in 2016. Southern Oregon lost 4 All-Americans, including the NAIA Player of the Year, after 2014. Not that we won’t miss this year’s seniors, but the loss of 4 All-Americans isn’t the case after 2015. All-American Julius Rucker, Tanner Trosin, Matt Retzlaff, all of the running backs, and most of the other core players will be back in 2016.

P.S. Once again Massey was better at predicting things than biased people like myself and the coaches. Luckily, no Marian fans took me up on my wagering proposition.
