One of the things Pike Place Market is famous for is its fish. When you order the fish they throw the fish from behind the counter to the guy helping you on the other side who wraps it up for you to take away. Well, last week, and for the next couple weeks, there are no flying fish. Instead, there is lots of noisy construction.
I may take a little side trip to Finland this summer while working in Denmark. In the middle of a blizzard, we ended up with a premature visit of sorts a couple nights ago. This was our hotel on our way home to Ashland from Utah.
The Finlandia Motel sign said “Vacancy” on our way in. We took the last room they had on this unplanned stop.
My first time down White Rabbit was New Year’s Day in 2001. The weather was warm, and I was a rather unexperienced mountain biker at the time. This trail is not for the beginner. There are some serious drops in a few places that aren’t even easy when you walk the trail. The names of the side trails are all Alice in Wonderland themed. For a map and directions see my prior post.
It’s that time of year again. Last weekend all of the election signs went up around town. There must be a law that says you can’t put them up more than 45 days before the election.
My friend and colleague, Dennis Slattery, is running for Ashland City Council. Voting in Oregon is easy as you get your ballot in the mail, fill it in, and drop it in a box from your car window. No waiting in line at a booth on election day.
Last night I went to see Floater (again) at the Rogue Theatre. This show was very different from my prior two experiences at the same place. The crowd, this time, was tiny as Floater was the opening band (for Days of the New). If Floater was the headliner the place would have been packed. Many, of the few concert goers, left after Floater’s short set of only about six or seven songs.
The pic above I took from my car at midnight. Rob Wynia, of Floater, is standing under the marquee and talking with some other guys. Floater is playing an acoustic set tonight, but I will pass since it will probably be another mini set list.
Here is a video I took of them doing “Weightless” off their “Stone by Stone” CD. The lighting in the Rogue Theatre (in Grants Pass, almost an hour north of Ashland on I-5) was really bad, but the audio is pretty good (on this song anyway). There were many audio problems during the night including Rob’s mic not working for half of one song and annoying feedback during much of Days of the New’s performance.
I meant to include the ending of our Crater Lake day in Crater Lake week a couple week’s back. With all of our troubles going around the lake and having our bikes stolen, we ended up leaving Crater Lake later than planned which meant we were far hungrier. We were hoping for a quick bite to eat at Beckie’s Cafe.
When we arrived at Beckie’s (by Union Creek in Prospect) we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. 45 minutes later we were seated and another 45 minutes later they finally brought our food. We weren’t very happy by then. It was our first time ordering anything other than pie at Beckie’s. That was a mistake. My blue cheese burger didn’t have any blue cheese on it and was only average, at best.
Beckie’s Cafe does do a great pie though. Today’s photo is of the pie menu. Which would you order?

As mentioned yesterday, it took me 10 years to notice The Peerless Hotel, even though it is noted in 1,000 Places To See Before You Die.
The building, and Coke sign, were refreshed in the 1990s after seeing more than 90 years of very few changes.
The old SOU logo is being replaced with a new one. The one in today’s photo will likely be replaced in the next month. The art buildings can be seen in the background.
I always thought the old logo was supposed to represent the mountains, but I recently heard that they are supposed to be the windows in Churchill Hall. A photo or two of the new SOU logo will be coming here soon.
The weather has been really great in Ashland since returning from hot and humid Tokyo. Every day the highs have been in the 80s, lows in the 50s, and best of all no humidity. The humidity is about the only thing I don’t miss about Japan.
Before my year in Japan I would visit Quiznos about once a week for lunch. It was my favorite place for lunch in fact. Just across the street from SOU, the Quiznos sub sandwiches were far superior to Subway (which is actually on campus).
After a week back in town I decided to go out for my first meal back home. I totally missed the “Space For Lease” sign and went straight to the door. There I found the sad news that Quiznos had gone out of business. Nooooooo……
I guess they didn’t think I was coming back to support them. 🙁 There was always a line at lunch so I’m not sure what happened to cause the crash while I was gone. Maybe the place was empty at night and on weekends?
I bet there will be some students next month who are unhappy to find Quiznos went under while they were away on summer break.
