I spotted these containers in Butte Creek Mill along with a ton of other antiques. The swastika was actually a very popular symbol before Hitler and the Nazis made it infamous. I’m guessing that means these biscuit tins are pre-1935. Care for a swastika biscuit from Portland, Oregon?
I’m in Copenhagen, Denmark (at least I hope I am–I have actually pre-blogged this to post when I’m in Denmark). But this was the view a week and a half ago from Medford on the Bear Creek Greenway which runs from Ashland all the way to Central Point. From this vantage point on the bike overpass you get a clear view of Mt. Ashland and the I-5 sign pointing you to Ashland.
This was the scene outside the Rogue Theatre in Grants Pass, Oregon at midnight when Floater finished their performance.
A little earlier in the evening…
Last night Eric (pictured above) and I headed up to Grants Pass to see Floater for something like the sixth time. I brought along my Nikon D7000 to practice shooting concerts with before the festivals this summer for which I will likely have a press pass (Roskilde in Denmark and Getaway in Sweden). I didn’t really expect them to let me in with it, but they said nothing.
I’ll post a couple dozen photos and some videos from the show over the next week.

The Rogue Theatre’s poor lighting didn’t make photography easy. I tried a half dozen different settings and never really found anything that worked great in low light. Most of the shots that came out OK were on the rare occasions when the lighting got almost half-way decent for a moment.
The D7000 video capabilities aren’t too amazing in low light, or I didn’t have the settings right. Anyone know good settings for recording video at a concert on the D7000? I should have filmed the videos by the sound board for higher quality audio. Lesson learned.
A couple weeks ago a new sign appeared on the SOU campus right about where I took this photo. The path that cuts through the middle of campus (what some university’s call “the quad”) has been dubbed “Raider Way.” Raider is the school mascot (SOU Raiders).
Upon closer inspection you can find out how far it is to the library, the dorms, the HEC in Medford, and a few other places.
SOU has partnerships with Dankook University in Korea and Guanajuato University in Mexico. I have taught in Guanajuato and hope to teach at Dankook next summer.
When the temperature falls below freezing, is ice cream really what you crave? Probably not, but in the summer there are far more people at this ice cream parlor in Ashland. It was called BJ’s until about six years ago. I think Zoey is the name of the “new” owner. They still serve BJ’s ice cream (from Florence, Oregon).
The Ashland Independent Film Festival is just around the corner. This will be the 10th year for the annual festival. Most showings take place in the art-deco Varsity Theatre, pictured here, in downtown Ashland. The neon lights have been burning brightly on this theater since 1937.
For the last few days you had your choice of skating (per the blue sign), skiing, snow shoeing, or snow booting it through Lithia Park. I chose the latter although the others sounded funner.
The buildings in the background are part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
We had to kill some time on a weekday morning in Seattle. Not much was open, including the brewery. Tours began at 11 a.m. but we had to be on the other side of town before noon. I was hoping to have time for a tour the following day, but it didn’t work out. A Pike Kilt Lifter has to be good, right?
For capturing a rich assortment of colors, there is no better place than the Pike Place Market. Look, but in some cases, don’t touch.
