I took a ride on the Bear Creek Greenway yesterday and discovered this view. I’ve ridden (or, less frequently, walked) the greenway dozens of times over the past 20 years, maybe over a hundred. But I’ve never noticed this view before. Was it always there and I just missed it? Or did last September’s Almeda Fire allow it to be seen? I don’t know, but I’m glad to have finally found it.

The Greenway has been far from green, until the last few days, since the Almeda Fire back in September. This area has been completely black for five months. But nature is healing itself and spring is on the way.

Today’s photo comes from Ashland Pond, looking west, less than 48 hours after the Almeda Fire began a couple hundred feet behind this location. The fire headed northwest, blown by strong winds, from here and destroyed much of Talent and Phoenix in the subsequent 16 hours or so.

One of my favorite places to visit in town is located close to the origin of the horrific Almeda Fire that began on September 8, 2020 and razed over 600 homes, mostly in Phoenix and Talent, Oregon.
I rode my bike down Almeda Drive and Glendower Street today, like many times before, but everything is different. The homes are all still there, and there doesn’t appear to be any damage to the structures, but the fields nearby are a wasteland coated in inches of ash.

Or is it Ashland Ponds? This place is Ashland Ponds on Google Maps, but there is only one pond here.
I had never heard of, or happened on, this place after nearly 20 years in Ashland. And I get around, but somehow Ashland Pond never made it onto my radar. We were heading out to do a ride/run on the Bear Creek Greenway, like we have a million times before, when I saw this on Google Maps with what appeared to be a trail around it so we investigated. Lovely spot with no people and lots of wildlife. We saw numerous birds, ducks, and turtles. Upon further research it appears that you may encounter a family of river otters in this place as well.
You can’t get here from the Bear Creek Greenway (as far as I can tell). Instead, head to the end of Glendower Street, through the gap in the barrier, and go down and to the left.
Mt. Ashland from Medford
I’m in Copenhagen, Denmark (at least I hope I am–I have actually pre-blogged this to post when I’m in Denmark). But this was the view a week and a half ago from Medford on the Bear Creek Greenway which runs from Ashland all the way to Central Point. From this vantage point on the bike overpass you get a clear view of Mt. Ashland and the I-5 sign pointing you to Ashland.

I went for a little bike ride yesterday on the Bear Creek Greenway. Someone is in the process of building a BMX track at the Ashland end of the bike path near the Ashland Dog Park.
A couple of boys were admiring my new (to me, it’s actually used) lefty fork Cannondale so I started chatting with them. I took a few pictures of the boys on the BMX track and sent the pics to them via email after they texted me their email addresses. They were quite happy with the photos.
