Basho’s hermitage (Bashodo or 芭蕉堂)
I have mentioned Bashodo before, but I think this is the first picture from the place that I’ve posted. I wonder how much it has changed in the 300 plus years since Basho supposedly lived here.

Narita rice paddies
Today’s image is one of the last photos I took during our one-year stint in Japan. This pic was on our way back to the US.
The Narita Airport is quite a distance from central Tokyo. The area around the airport is nothing like central Tokyo. Instead, the landscape is mostly rice paddies. Most of the year, this area doesn’t look like much, but in July, August, and September things are quite green with the ripening rice.
Curry Udon (カレーうどん)
On a cold, rainy day, there is nothing better than a bowl of curry udon. This particular bowl was probably the best one I’ve ever had. I don’t remember the name of the place, but it was just outside of the Shinkiba Station in Tokyo. Nothing fancy–just your typical chain that can miss as often as be a hit.
Monday morning quarterbacking with “Bobby 2010”
The Chiba Lotte Marines are going to the Japan Series this week. Bobby Valentine is not the manger in 2010. He was the manager during their losing seasons the past several years. Despite the loses, the fans wanted him back this year for another go. I took today’s picture during a 2009 game. Fans were mad at management for not signing Valentine to the 2010 season. I wonder what they think now that the Marines are doing so much better without him?
Hakuba mountain biking
Mountain biking in Hakuba in late October, the place was deserted. Good times.
A piece of the rock
A mixture of modern and classic can be found on the top of the hill at Nagatacho in central Tokyo. This is the Hie Sanno Shrine which features the guardian deity of old Edo Castle and the current Imperial Palace.
