Nyhavn after dark

It’s difficult doing night photography in the summer in Scandinavia. 9 p.m. is still pre-sunset, and 10 p.m. – 11 p.m. is sunset time. To get any kind of darkness you have to wait until midnight.

Today’s photo features Copenhagen’s famous Nyhavn. I didn’t plan to be here at midnight, but I ended up here on the way home from a dinner party so I decided to pull out my camera anyway. I used my 18-200mm lens, which isn’t the best for this kind of photography, because my other lenses were not with me at the time.

Danish flags outside Copenhagen's "Black Diamond" library at half mast

Norway was once part of Denmark. The two countries still have very close ties. Almost a fourth of my students at Copenhagen Business School are from Norway. The tragedy in Oslo on Friday is probably affecting Denmark more than any other country outside of Norway.

Today’s photo is of the flags outside the “Black Diamond” library in Copenhagen, which are being flown at half mast in memory of those who lost their lives in Norway.

Another photo today from the Copenhagen Harbor boat tour I took earlier in the week. The buildings in the background are part of Amalienborg Palace, the winter homes of Denmark’s royal family. They head out to the countryside in the summer.
