Sunrise over Mt. Shasta from Mt. Ashland
Last weekend the conditions were right for an early morning trip up Mt. Ashland. The snow on Mt. Ashland had melted, I figured there would still be snow left on Mt. Shasta, the skies were mostly clear, and I couldn’t sleep. There was also a nice halo around the moon so I hopped in the car and drove on up for an early morning adventure.

I went for a fall photo shoot in Lithia Park on Sunday. Most trees aren’t at their peak yet, but some are. On my way home, as I headed down Ridge Rd., I looked up at the above birches trying unsuccessfully to completely block out the blue sky. I get a bit nostalgic around birch trees as we had three in my front yard as I was growing up.

Dusk settles in over Mount Shasta
Mt. Shasta is the wrong direction to watch the sunset from Mt. Ashland, but this is what it can look like at dusk from the northwest. I still need to get up there to see what it looks like at sunrise.
Paulina Plunge Tour Waterfall
Today’s photo is of the first waterfall we encountered on the Paulina Plunge Tour near Bend in August. It was the only waterfall we didn’t jump in.
Ashland experienced some rain this past week for just the first or second time in months. Some leaves have begun to turn colors for fall, but most are still at least a week or two away from major fall foliage.

The Rogue Valley has historically been known as a Mecca for pears. With global warming it may become the Napa Valley of the 21st (or 22nd?) Century. The number of wineries has grown substantially in the past couple decades.
A couple days ago I was at a conference at Eden Valley Orchards, also home to the EdenVale Winery, and the ripe grapes looked about ready for picking.
Mt. Thielsen from Highway 138
Not far from Crater Lake, but even closer to Diamond Lake, is the unusual Mt. Thielsen in Southern Oregon. The volcano that created the mountain has been extinct for a quarter of a million years and glaciers did a number on the rock, leaving this strange-looking shape.
I took today’s photo on our way to Bend last month.

With the sun low in the sky the flowers, and even the ground, really lit up into some amazing colors.
Hiking Grizzly Peak at dusk
Last night we went for a little hike on Grizzly Peak and timed it so that we’d get to the side facing Ashland about the time the sun went down. The views were even better than I had imagined, and the way back down in the dark (we had flashlights and headlamps) wasn’t bad either.
The stars from the Grizzly Peak Trail parking lot were amazing too. The Milky Way was clearly visible, and it wasn’t cold.
