Before the evening plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival there has been a long tradition of a free Green Show. Today’s picture is from the Green Show a couple nights back.

Until last year, a group of dancers performed in front of live music nightly. Beginning last year the dancers are gone and every night is something different. The dancers were consistently good. Now you never know what you will get. Sometimes great, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. The starting time for the OSF Green Show is 7:15 after Memorial Day until mid-August. From mid-August until early October the Green Show starts at 6:45. If you want a good seat you should arrive at least 20 minutes early.

I was playing around with the modes on my LX3 on my bike ride the other day around Lithia Park. By flipping the switch to SCN and then choosing “Hi Speed Burst” I was able to take six pictures per second. You lose a lot of quality in so doing, but the pictures aren’t bad if you are in good lighting and close to your target. In this series I wasn’t close enough.

Check out the fun you can have with putting these pictures together backwards with a program like Windows Movie Maker.

Today’s picture was taken from the highway, window rolled down, going 65 MPH. The snow on Mt. Ashland is mostly gone now in mid-June, but there was still quite a bit when I took this on May 19. The Ashland Springs Hotel is the most visible and recognizable building. My house is among the trees beyond the hotel. A great place to live…

I still haven’t figured out how to use WordPress’s gallery feature very well. I was hoping that when you clicked on one of the above images you’d get a large image and be able to navigate to the next picture. You can’t, unfortunately. You can get a large image if you click the picture and then click it again on the next page though.

After attending eight straight SOU graduations, I’m going to miss next year’s commencement since I will be out of the country. I think already missing next year caused me to take more pictures than normal this year. 😉

Last month I went on a field trip with my daughter’s class to Crater Lake. The weather was strange all day. This is what it looked like when we arrived at Walker Elementary School at 7:30 in the morning.

A few weeks back the Ashland Middle School put on a play called “Twentieth Century Broadway” which was actually about five mini-plays including The Grapes of Wrath, The Crucible, Hair, and others. It was a musical.

Every year the International Students Association at Southern Oregon University in Ashland puts on a show. The performances are always top notch, the crowd is crazy loud, and people are turned away at the door because the demand for seats (all free) is so high. This was actually the first year I made it in since four years ago. The prior two years we didn’t get to the Music Recital Hall early enough to get one of the 440 seats. This year one of my students made sure we got in. (Thanks Ixel!)

For the next week I’ll show you some photos from the event.

After being welcomed to the show by about a dozen students in a dozen different languages, the first performance was a Native American drum circle, occasionally flanked by dozens of international students in their home country’s traditional dress.

When I was a kid growing up I could hear the train out my bedroom window every evening and morning. I loved the sound of the distant train. When we moved to Ashland in 2000 I was happy to hear the sound of the train in the distance once again. However, we soon upgraded our windows to the double-pane variety which meant no more train sounds except in the summer when we left our windows open. Now we don’t even get that as the trains have stopped rolling through town for the past few years. I don’t know why but it has been a long time since a train came through Ashland.

As I was riding my bike over the overpass in town I saw a guy walking on the train tracks playing (or pretending to anyway) an electric flying V guitar. I quickly stopped and pulled out my camera. However, I hadn’t reloaded my SD card and by the time I did so he was already under me. So I was left with the above view of empty tracks instead. No train, no guitarist. No one is even on the bike path that runs along the tracks on the left side of this photograph.

The way my camera is pointing leads to Medford, Oregon (followed by Eugene, Portland, Seattle, etc.). The way the guitarist was walking is California, which if he followed the tracks he would have ended up in about 15 miles later.
