One of my favorite views in town is from the Ashland Middle School. I took this picture from inside the school looking out to the north. If I was a student I would not be able to do anything but stare out the windows–especially this time of year when things have gone green. We only get a few months of rich green before summer turns much of this view a duller, brownish color.
Softball season is about to begin. We won the league last year with a record of 15-1. (I wasn’t there for the game we lost so I take no responsibility for it. 😉 ) We had our first practice of the year at the previously mentioned US Cellular. It had been raining much of the day so everything was very green. You can even see some mustard or other yellow flowers on the hill leading up to the Manor. A new portion of the Manor, that is currently under construction, can also be seen in this photo.
I-5 runs between the field and the Manor but no cars happened to be captured in this picture that I can see. The Rogue Valley Manor, by the way, is a retirement living center run by Pacific Retirement Services in Medford, just north of Ashland.
I previously mentioned how Ashland was the inspiration for the setting of the recent movie, Coraline. While on a recent bike ride the view in the above photograph reminded me of that movie, at least the foreground. If you’ve seen the movie you’ll remember the environment surrounding the well. Where I took this picture from, the terrain, trees, and general atmosphere is very similar.
There are many other things in Ashland that were drawn on and appeared in the movie. The most obvious, of course, is the letter that says “Ashland, OR” right on it. But there are others that I’ll share with you in the future.
Last weekend we had perfect weather for soccer (and just about anything else). Temperatures were in the low 70s, the brownish-green winter grass turned a bright green, and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom.
This game was Ashland vs. Medford in Medford, 10-year old girls in a competitive league. The outcome? 0 – 0. Don’t you just love those high scoring soccer matches that can end without a victor? 😉
Let’s wrap up Portland week with a look at the lobby of the hotel we stayed at, the Hotel Modera. The hotel was very nice. It was clean and extremely quiet. I can’t remember the last time I’ve stayed somewhere in which I never heard a peep once inside my room. We never heard anything from neighbors, traffic, etc. It probably helped that we were on the top floor in a corner room, but it may be the same in all the rooms.
The room was something like $130 a night. Parking was $20 a night. We only pulled the car out once in three days as you can get to most things on the nearby, free street car system and then not have to worry about parking once you get to your destination.
Tomorrow we’ll return this blog to Ashland.
OMSIÂ (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry)Â is a great place to spend the day. See my other post for a tip on how to get in for free.
