The tallest building in town, the Ashland Springs Hotel (formerly known as the Mark Antony and before that as the Lithia Hotel) is moving into its 85th year. Tomorrow thousands will gather in front of or near the hotel from all over Oregon and Northern California to participate in Ashland’s Fourth of July festivities.
Today’s picture was taken from the highway, window rolled down, going 65 MPH. The snow on Mt. Ashland is mostly gone now in mid-June, but there was still quite a bit when I took this on May 19. The Ashland Springs Hotel is the most visible and recognizable building. My house is among the trees beyond the hotel. A great place to live…

After wandering around town for a while we entered Bella’s Sports Pub. It was packed on a Wednesday afternoon at about 2. The service was horrible, the music was awful, and it was way too loud so we left after a single beer. Next we ventured into Madison Bear Garden. This has to be one of Chico’s, if not all of Northern California’s, finest establishments. Beers were only $2, the music was great and at the right volume level, games were on the many tubes, food was good, and everyone was having a fine time. I think we spent the next 4 hours or so here.
The above picture was the only time the place wasn’t wall to wall with people. Again, I found this incredible on a Wednesday afternoon. Don’t Chico’s students have class? It seems they drink more in Chico than in Canada.
Chico was known as the party school back when I was a high schooler in California in the 1980s. Apparently that hasn’t changed. Even though it was a Wednesday, the campus was practically deserted. The bars, however, were quite crowded on a Wednesday afternoon. I’ll show you one next time.
The main reason for the road trip mentioned in my last entry was to see Opeth at Chico’s Senator Theatre. I would have liked to have seen Dredg a few nights later too, but we were only there for one night.
A cow grazed in this pasture until last year when the old heifer died. The American flag in the center is in front of Premier West Bank. The building to the left is the Apple Cellar Bakery & Cafe. The mountains in the back are the Siskiyous. And the cherry blossoms are now gone. But they were at their peak last month when I took today’s photograph.
I took today’s photograph from the Computing Services building on the Southern Oregon University campus early last month. This is my view as I walk to class (from Central Hall to Taylor Hall) most days.
Southern Oregon University’s Plunkett Center sits on the corner of Mountain and Siskiyou. The building serves as the home of the foundation and alumni relations. A beautiful building in any season, my favorite is April when one of the two trees in front of it is always in bloom. The tree on the right of the building (center of this photograph) had yet to bloom when I took this picture in early April.
Softball season is about to begin. We won the league last year with a record of 15-1. (I wasn’t there for the game we lost so I take no responsibility for it. 😉 ) We had our first practice of the year at the previously mentioned US Cellular. It had been raining much of the day so everything was very green. You can even see some mustard or other yellow flowers on the hill leading up to the Manor. A new portion of the Manor, that is currently under construction, can also be seen in this photo.
I-5 runs between the field and the Manor but no cars happened to be captured in this picture that I can see. The Rogue Valley Manor, by the way, is a retirement living center run by Pacific Retirement Services in Medford, just north of Ashland.
