These guys finished with an excellent cover of Helloween’s “Ride The Sky” which I was into in high school (but probably haven’t listened to in almost two decades) before any of the members of Gladius were even born. Does that make me old or the music timeless? Or both?

Last night there was a Cinco de Mayo Metal Show in Medford with Cauldron (from Canada), Gladius (Portland) & Negative-Zen (also Portland). Sunday night isn’t the best night for a show, but Musichead shows usually end before 10 p.m. so I headed up I-5 to check it out.

First up was Negative-Zen. The thing that looks like a sharks fin in the foreground of the left part of the above photo was actually the mohawk of the person standing in front of me.

Kudos to Core System Failure for not only putting on a very entertaining, live performance on Saturday night but also for bringing the lighting and allowing the other bands (Lich King, Crimson Guardian, and Witch Cult) to use the lighting as well.

Core System Failure will be playing at Edgefest 2013 on June 29 at Howie’s on Front Street. I will not be able to attend as I will be in Korea in late June. Hopefully, I will see them again soon though.

Lich King @ Musichead (4/27/13)

Even if Vio-lence didn’t, more-or-less, cease to exist as a band 20+ years ago, they still wouldn’t sound as much like Vio-lence today as Lich King does. 😉 Vio-lence came on the scene soon after I left the San Francisco Bay Area in 1986 so I never got to see them. That’s OK because I saw Lich King last night and not only do they sound as good, they have a great sense of humor and “funness” to their shows that I’m guessing Vio-lence did not.

Lich King doesn’t pretend to be carving out some new genre. In fact, they label themselves “East Coast Bay Area Thrash Metal.” I like that they say on their Facebook page, “where we stand out is that we admit [we play old school Bay Area thrash]. We think the sound of thrash was perfected in the 80s and we’re not trying to add anything to the mix.” Actually, they do add something to the mix. While thrash has always been good fun, they make it even funner.

Wild Hunt is such a ridiculously amazing band. Last night they were in Ashland. Tonight they play Springfield/Eugene, and tomorrow night they will wrap up their four night tour of the Northwest in Seattle.
