Massey Ratings, being far less biased and without relying on any “various criteria”–which sounds like an arbitrary system, was far kinder to the Raiders. SOU landed at #11 according to Massey which would have not only been good enough for a playoff spot but a first round bye as well.
Several of the teams that made it to the NAIA football playoffs wouldn’t have made the cut had computerized rankings been utilized. Massey had Pikeville, for instance, at #41. Kansas Wesleyan clocked in at #50. Four other playoff teams weren’t in Massey’s top 25. Five of those six teams are close to NAIA headquarters which must be one of the key criteria the committee factors into its decisions.
