Japanese ladies and the Sugamo Togenuki Jizo (巣鴨とげ抜き地蔵)

巣鴨とげ抜き地蔵

Sugamo (巣鴨) is famous for being the old ladies’ Harajuku. However, when I captured this image of the well known and popular statue which cures ailments, it was young ladies looking for a little supernatural help.

Maybe to cure their aching feet?

One of the more human things I saw after the quake was a young woman bravely climbing up the stairs at Hamamatsucho Station, her shoes half off. Kind of nice to see someone admit these high heel shoes do hurt.

    Good point, Julie.

The way this jizo works is you touch the area on it that you want fixed on you. It looks like they were going for a face or shoulder ailment.
