Yakyu (野球)

Japanese Little League Baseball in Tokyo

Just outside the Tokyo Dome I found these kids playing baseball (yakyu). Maybe this is an unusual sight to see in the middle of one of the world’s biggest cities. But Tokyo is no ordinary city. Perhaps the strangest thing is when this scene took place–not in summer, fall, or even spring. This kid was laying down a bunt while the runner on second sprinted for third in the middle of February.

Miso Ramen

While wandering around Iidabashi in Tokyo on a cold, February day we stumbled upon みそ神楽ラーメン (address: 東京都新宿区津久戸町3-12). I doubt the place is particularly famous, but this ramen really hit the spot.

Between Kamakura and Enoshima you can ride an old school train with views overlooking the ocean. Today’s photo is of the other view, out the back of the train.

Old-style Japanese storehouse stuck in modern Japan

Japanese storehouse (倉)

Japan has some really nice looking storehouses. You find them often in the country, but I’ve seen a few right in Tokyo. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get a photo of one in its pure, classic form without more recent developments (cement walls, power lines, fences, etc.) taking over the picture.

Handmade Hakuba Zen Noodles

Just across the road from our lodgings in Hakuba was 蕎麦酒房膳, a place that specialized in classic, hand-made soba (本格手打ちそば). Great food and a lovely atmosphere, if you happen to make it to Hakuba someday, you should give it a try.
