Hiroshima Castle in the rain

The day after I arrived in Hiroshima, three years ago today, I went for a walk and ended up at Hiroshima Castle. I was hoping to go to the Hiroshima Carp baseball game that night. However, the skies opened up, and the rain came down in buckets. Maybe you can see some of it in today’s photo. I got in a taxi, and the driver told me the game had been cancelled. Luckily there was a day game the next day so I went to it instead. However, that delayed my journey to Osaka which meant that I missed a Koshien game.

Today I’m boarding a plane for Copenhagen so expect some photos from Denmark soon. I’d like to get back to Japan next summer. Anyone have a job for me in Japan for a few weeks or a couple months next year? It need not pay much. よろしくお願いします. 行って来ます.

Yasuhiro Ogawa (小川 泰弘) of the Yakult Swallows (Hiroshima, Japan 2013)

MLB begins today. NPB has been going for a couple weeks.

Ogawa, pictured above, is one of Japan’s finest. He is 1-1 on the young season with an ERA of 1.20. Over the past few seasons he has a combined ERA of 3.11. His rookie season, when I took today’s photo, was his best as he went 16-4 with a 2.93 ERA. Last year Yakult nearly won it all, but they are off to a rough start so far in 2016.

Hiroshima after dark

Hiroshima Electric Railway (Hiroden or 広電)

Getting around Hiroshima isn’t difficult on the more than 100-year old electric bus system. They aren’t nearly as fast as Tokyo’s subway system, but Hiroshima isn’t nearly as large either.

The Sukiya (すき家) in the right of today’s photo is one of my favorite fast food joints in Japan. A bowl of gyudon (牛丼) for under $5 hits the spot every time.
