I watched a beautiful film (The Birth of Sake) set in Ishikawa and the Noto Hanto this morning at the Ashland Independent Film Festival. I came home to this random, desktop image from the same general location and felt I should share.

Okunoto Senmaida

Just to the northeast of the town of Wajima on the Notohanto are these terraced rice paddies known as senmaida (or thousand rice paddies or 千枚田). There are several senmaida locations in Japan.

千枚田

As mentioned a while back, we were able to make it to Ishikawa Ken (石川県) to visit Ryan’s homestay family. Actually, this turned into a second, mini-homestay for Ellie too as both kids stayed with Ojiichan.

Ojiichan took us on a wonderful drive all over the Noto Peninsula (能登半島). One of the many things we saw on that drive was Senmaida (or thousand rice paddies) which flow into the ocean, an amazing sight. During the summer the paddies are encircled in lights, but we didn’t stay around for the evening to see that spectacle.

Wedded rocks (meotoiwa or 夫婦岩)

Today we have another picture that Ryan took when he visited Kanazawa. I’m not sure the exact location of these rocks in the Sea of Japan, but Ryan says they were between Kanazawa (金沢) and Wajima (輪島).

Update: We just got back from visiting Ishikawa Prefecture. During the trip I found out the name of these rocks is Hatagoiwa (機具岩) in Shikamachi (志賀町).
