Voss Stone Church (Voss kyrkje or Vangskyrkja)

voss kyrkje vangen stone church voss norway Vangskyrkja

When you read about “Norway in a Nutshell” it seems that the train ride and going through the fjords will be the highlights. Perhaps they are, but the bus ride from the fjord (Gudvangen) to Voss is amazing too. In Voss, while waiting for the train, I walked around town and took this photo of Voss’s 13th Century stone church. It boggles my mind to see buildings that have been standing for hundreds of years before Columbus “discovered” America. Luckily this building wasn’t destroyed (like much of Voss) during German bombing in WW2.

Viking ship (Oseberg ship) in the Viking Ship Museum

From central Oslo you can catch a ferry over to Bygdøy to check out the Viking Ship Museum (Vikingskipshuset på Bygdøy). There isn’t much in the museum except for three, original, viking ships. All three are very cool, but I like this one the best. Perhaps the finest find of the Viking Age, you can read more about the Oseberg ship here.

Approaching Flåm

Today’s random desktop image is this one. I took this photo out the window of the Flåm Railway train, a train ride I will never forget.

Huldra – Lady in Red of the Forest – Kjosfossen Falls

Huldra emerges from the forest to dance next to Kjosfossen Falls

On the Noway in a Nutshell tour, in the summer anyway, tourists get to experience a Huldra. She appears near Kjosfossen Falls, does a dance, and then disappears into the forest once again.

Frogner Park Fountain (Frognerparken Fontenen)

Gustav Vigeland's fountain in Frogner Park

The fountain in Frogner Park was perhaps the first item of Vigeland to be created for the park. Made of bronze, the reliefs and statues have a “from death comes life” theme.

Flowers out the train window on Norway in a Nutshell

There were many scenes I couldn’t capture while doing “Norway in a Nutshell” simply because the train was moving and the photos wouldn’t come out well. I took today’s photo (through the window still, but at least we weren’t moving) while the train made a brief stop.
