Eric Thompson receives honorable mention

Eric Thompson’s 19 points and 11 rebounds in each of SOU’s wins last week earned him an honorable mention from the Cascade Conference today. The Raiders will go for the championship tomorrow night in Idaho.

In a bizarre twist of fortunes, the Southern Oregon University women’s basketball team, who were seemingly destined for a championship matchup with Eastern, were eliminated by OIT, a team they had dominated twice before this year, for their first loss of the season at home. Meanwhile the men, who were crushed by Warner Pacific twice this season, were huge underdogs on the road going in to tonight’s game. However, the Raiders were victorious, by a wide margin, and will play for the conference championship next week.

The Southern Oregon University women’s basketball team has dominated their opponents in recent weeks, including a win earlier this week in blow out fashion to move to the semifinals of the CCC playoffs. Tonight they host OIT in Ashland. Game time is 7 p.m. Unfortunately, I will be out of town. A Raider win and EOU loss will give the Raiders one final home game next week. Otherwise, this will be the last basketball game ever in McNeal after nearly 60 years of use.

Throwback Thursday O-Line

@dmgibson93 @SOURaiders @SOU_Football #tbt #ThrowbackThursday

A key piece of the Raiders’ success in their 2014 National Championship run was the offensive line. Austin Dodge was sacked only 23 times in over 540 attempts (an average amount for that many attempts would be around 40). The running backs averaged over 5 yards per carry.

The bad news is that two of these guys (Bubba Rylance and Drew Gibson) graduated. The good news is that three of them will be back for 2015.

#8 Raider women play tonight

@SOURaiders @SOU_WBB

The first round of the CCC tourney begins tonight in Ashland at 7 p.m. The 25-3 Raiders are already a lock for the 2015 NAIA National Women’s Basketball Tournament, which begins March 11 in Sioux City, Iowa, but a strong showing in the CCC tournament can earn them one of the top seeds (and possibly weaker opponents in the early rounds) in the national tournament.

A win tonight against College of Idaho will give them another home game in the second round of the conference tourney on Friday. More details can be found here.

P.S. The rankings just came out and SOU is still at #8. Only one other team with 3 or fewer loses is outside of the top four. There is probably some middle-of-the-country bias against teams in the west (like in the NAIA football rankings which tend to penalize Frontier Conference teams) so the Raiders will need to prove themselves at the national tournament.

It’s pretty unusual for the CCC to pick both their offensive and defensive players of the week from the same team, but the SOU Raiders had a pretty unusual week going 6-0, including a 4-1 victory over the #10 team in the country. This is a pretty unusual team, with their 16-4 record and roster made up of seven freshmen. They were picked to come in 5th place in the CCC, and, although the CCC games haven’t begun, this team looks better than a 5th place team.
