Beach in Brookings, Oregon

We just got back from a couple of days in Brookings on the Oregon Coast. The forecast was for non-stop rain, but we got lucky a for an hour or so with a bit of sun. This beach is about 3 miles south of the entrance to the Chetco River. It’s actually just a bit north of the Crissey Field State Park. You probably can’t access it easily without renting a place that is on the beach.

End of volleyball season

Yesterday was the last tournament of the season for mOcean volleyball. This one was held at the North Medford High School gym, home of the Black Tornado. My bum is ready to rejoice for not having to sit on a hard, bleacher seat for hours on end any longer.

Jacksonville Christmas

I took some photos of Jacksonville during the Christmas season and then completely forgot about them. This is a night shot which I didn’t think would come out, given the dense fog, but the photo came out OK anyway. A closer view during the daytime can be found here.

Softball

I took my first swings of the year yesterday. Felt great. They weren’t at the field pictured above, which is where we have our games in Medford. They were in Ashland at the Iowa Street fields. The view was beautiful. It looked like this as the snow from a few days back has yet to melt on the top of Grizzly Peak. Alas, I didn’t have my camera with me so I have no real photos of the day.

A walk along the edge of Lake Bonneville

Another photo from my December in Utah today… Never heard of Lake Bonneville? Most people probably haven’t, but don’t feel bad. It is a prehistoric lake. What remains is now called the Great Salt Lake, which you have probably heard of.

The day after I took this photo I went on another walk in the same general area. The houses in that picture would have been under water back when Lake Bonneville was in its heyday. The walk was beautiful but extremely cold.

Polygamy Porter

I forgot I took this photo on my cell phone while in Utah in December. Utah has some strange laws regarding alcohol. The first Utah brewery only came into being in the late 1980s. This was the company, Wasatch Beers. Brew pubs were actually illegal in Utah until about 20 years ago. Even now there are only 12 in the entire state.

There are all kinds of crazy rules in Utah, which I don’t fully understand, like when you can buy beer, how much alcohol it can have in it (not much), and where you can purchase other alcoholic beverages in the state. I don’t think you can even get wine at the grocery store.

This Polygamy Porter made me chuckle. At only 4% alcohol, you’re going to need more than just one to feel any of its effects.

University of Oregon Ducks plane

It’s time to wrap up this series from my recent trip to Seattle. I’ll do so with a photo of the plane we flew on from Seattle to Medford. We arrived at the stroke of midnight (thanks to a delay in our departure).

The Pike Brewing Co.

We had to kill some time on a weekday morning in Seattle. Not much was open, including the brewery. Tours began at 11 a.m. but we had to be on the other side of town before noon. I was hoping to have time for a tour the following day, but it didn’t work out. A Pike Kilt Lifter has to be good, right?
