Today’s photo includes the start of “The Green Show.” In the background, you can see a banner going across the street mentioning this being the 75th season for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Much farther away you can see Grizzly Peak.
I meant to include the ending of our Crater Lake day in Crater Lake week a couple week’s back. With all of our troubles going around the lake and having our bikes stolen, we ended up leaving Crater Lake later than planned which meant we were far hungrier. We were hoping for a quick bite to eat at Beckie’s Cafe.
When we arrived at Beckie’s (by Union Creek in Prospect) we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. 45 minutes later we were seated and another 45 minutes later they finally brought our food. We weren’t very happy by then. It was our first time ordering anything other than pie at Beckie’s. That was a mistake. My blue cheese burger didn’t have any blue cheese on it and was only average, at best.
Beckie’s Cafe does do a great pie though. Today’s photo is of the pie menu. Which would you order?

As mentioned yesterday, it took me 10 years to notice The Peerless Hotel, even though it is noted in 1,000 Places To See Before You Die.
The building, and Coke sign, were refreshed in the 1990s after seeing more than 90 years of very few changes.
I have lived in Ashland now for almost 10 years, but for some reason The Peerless never made it on my radar screen. Strange since the place was built 110 years ago and is on the National Register of Historic Places. We had dinner at the restaurant last week. The food was good, although not spectacular. I’ll show you a photo of the outside of The Peerless Hotel tomorrow.
From the aforementioned Britt Gardens, today’s photo is an 8-second exposure from a picnic table. From the back half of the lawn you will probably not be able to see much of the stage. We weren’t back on the picnic tables, but I could still only rarely see the performers.
The full moon rising over Medford in the distance was beautiful though.
Last week we went to Britt Gardens (“The Britt”) to see Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion Summer Love Tour.” I had never heard of Garrison Keillor before. It was an interesting evening, but I was at least 25 years too young to fully enjoy it all (thank goodness!). This was my first Britt show in maybe three years. Last time I was front and center for Chicago which was lots of fun.
Anyway, Jacksonville is a beautiful town, perhaps the best preserved of its era in the USA (or at least the western states). I’ll have to post more from Jacksonville in the future. Jacksonville is less than 20 miles from Ashland. Pictured above is what (I’m guessing based on the writing on the brick wall) is the old Levi Strauss Building.
Here is one last image of Crater Lake for a while. I think I took this at or near Merriam Point on the west side of the Rim Drive.
Rim Drive around Crater Lake offers many majestic views. Although the road is paved, it isn’t an easy ride. There can be lots of cars (avoid weekends and holidays), and there isn’t a flat section to be found. As a rider you’ll do lots of climbing.
Today’s photo of Ryan is of one of those brief downhill moments.
The skies were gray all day long, but they cleared a bit near the end of the day when I took this photo of Crater Lake from near Sentinel Rock. Unfortunately, my memory of this location is not a good one as our bikes had just been stolen. How can bikes you are riding get stolen you ask?
As mentioned before the day had its low points. The ride was about twice as long as anticipated and after 20 miles my legs began to cramp. A few miles later we hitched a ride and hid our bikes off the road with the intention of getting a ride to our car, driving our car back, and picking up the bikes. All went as planned until we got back and found the bikes missing. A dishonest someone must have seen us hiding the bikes. 🙁
The only silver lining is that my bike was in need of an overhaul anyway, and Ryan is getting too tall for his.
These little chipmunk-looking squirrels are all over the place at Crater Lake. They will gladly eat right out of your hand should you want to share your lunch.
