Our trip to the East Coast (New York and Boston) came to an end yesterday. Today’s photo is of the place we lodged at in Boston, 23 Temple Street. I’ll post more photos from Boston here.

Over the past month the most popular search term that landed people here was “graduation cap decoration ideas” because of this post I made of SOU’s 2011 Commencement. So, while a graduation ceremony can be boring at times (see above picture), I entertained myself this year by taking photos of decorated graduation caps. Enjoy.

Graduation not the end? Tell them where you are headed next on your grad cap.

Show the world that you did more in college than study. Won't mom and dad be proud?

Emile Amarotico
When Emile Amarotico was introduced as the representative of SOU’s Alumni Association welcoming new grads as freshly minted alumni, it was mentioned that when he and his wife walked at commencement a couple decades before, they did so with their baby girl. On this day, their daughter was graduating from SOU so it was an extra special day for the family.

I have trouble sleeping on vacation. I don’t know if it’s the different bed or what, but my vacation insomnia allows me to get photos like this when I’m travelling as I’m usually up and about before dawn. I only had my wide angle lens with me at the time, which is a bit of a shame as a close up of the fog in the distant trees with this kind of lighting may have been pretty cool if I had a lens with more reach.

Perhaps you are getting bored of viewing photos of SOU’s Women’s Rugby Team playing in prom dresses? I have more, many more photos I could show you in fact. But this will do it for Prom Dress Rugby week. Tomorrow we will resume with some different pics. As for me, I will be taking a train from New York to Boston tomorrow. I’ll be back in Ashland in about five days.

Similar to soccer, when the ball goes out of play in rugby someone must throw it in. Very different from soccer (football outside the USA), players are lifted up to tip the ball to their team (known as a “line-out” in rugby lingo). A line-out becomes a bit awkward when the players are wearing dresses and hands are going under them.

Southern Oregon University Women's Rugby - Prom Dress Game 2012
Like any prom, corsages were required at the Prom Dress Rugby game. Those with yellow corsages were on one team and those with pink ones were on the other.

Having never watched or played rugby before, I’m learning the rules and scoring just from the two games I’ve attended this year. The maneuver pictured above is known as a “try” and is accomplished by grounding the ball beyond the goal line. Five points are the result. Prom dresses are optional.
