The guy at Union Creek Resort wasn’t kidding when he said I could shoot some pool while I waited for the bathroom. Foosball was also an option. The views were great too. I’ll show you a picture out of the window in this picture tomorrow.
This past weekend we went snowmobiling. On the way there we stopped at the Union Creek Resort to use the bathroom. The new owners were extremely nice. My wife ran in and told them she would purchase something if she could just use the bathroom first. They showed her to the bathroom and told her she didn’t need to buy anything. They told me I could play pool while I waited. Their lodgings looked like a lot of fun so we will have to make a night of it at some point in the future. They also rent snowmobiles.
Beckie’s Cafe is across the street. We have enjoyed many a fine pie at Beckie’s over the years.
The Black Sheep, like Omar’s, is an Ashland icon. Fashioned like a British pub, you can play darts, make calls from a London-style phone booth, or just enjoy an English beer or meal. On Sundays they have Celtic music. I’ve actually been to the Black Sheep twice in the past couple weeks. I’ve never been in Louie’s (bottom left), but I’m guessing it, and the Black Sheep, were quite crowded last night for St. Patty’s Day.
The building the Black Sheep is in is more than a hundred years old (130 years next year to be exact). The Cafe sign on the side of it isn’t that old but I’m guessing it is several decades old. The heraldic banners you see in this picture are all over town, especially the plaza area, because of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Someone decided to dress up the rock art on the SOU campus.

Continuing from yesterday’s blog entry showing the Science Fair night at the elementary school, today’s photo is of one of the more popular Science Fair projects of the evening–the mini volcano. The volcano erupted again and again during the evening to the delight of everyone.
My daughter did an egg-getting-sucked-through-a-bottle experiment. We brought the laptop and had a little multimedia slideshow looping the following:
I’m not sure what this grassy part of campus is called, if it even has a name. I took this picture from Central Hall (where I work). The building on the far left is Computing Services; to the right of it you can see a small piece of Taylor Hall; and in the distance is the Stevenson Union building–home of the SOU Bookstore. I’ll try to remember to take this same picture in Spring, Fall, and on a snowy day in Winter so you can get a feel for the seasons on campus.
I headed into Lithia Park to try my first pictures shooting in RAW. The above isn’t one of them. I took the same picture in RAW and could not get it to look anywhere near as good as this. I took a bunch of others in both JPEG and RAW mode too. Same result. All look far better in non-RAW mode. The processing of the RAW images is a huge hassle too. Just to load one takes a few minutes and then the manipulation can take pretty much as long as you want to spend on it.
Some people don’t shoot in RAW because it takes a few seconds to save it to the memory card (as the RAW files are huge). That isn’t a problem with the LX3. In fact, I think you can take something like four or five pictures a second even in RAW mode. But my initial experiment in RAW will not likely have me using it again anytime soon.
