Last week we spent several days in Portland. So for the next week or so on Ashland Daily Photo you will get to see the other city on the far extreme of the state.
Today’s picture is of the lovely bacon donut we didn’t purchase at Voodoo Doughnut. The giant, glazed donut behind the bacon donut doesn’t look that large in this picture for some reason, but it is actually huge. I would estimate it to have at least 5X the calories of a regular glazed donut. It goes by the name Tex-Ass donut, and it is free if you can eat it in under 80 seconds.
I took this photograph from N Phoenix Road in Phoenix, just north of Ashland. Although the “mountain” on the right seems higher, it is actually only at an altitude of about 7,150 feet. The name is Wagner Butte and it makes for a beautiful hike in late spring.
To the left, and still covered in snow, is Mt. Ashland. The elevation of Mt. Ashland is over 7,500 feet. It appears lower from this angle simply because it is further away.
Even though I have lived in Southern Oregon for almost nine years now I have only seen Crater Lake once, and that was before moving here! The last time I went to Crater Lake it was the middle of the night to pick up my family camping in a snow storm. Needless to say, I didn’t see it then.
After snowmobiling nearby we decided to take a look at Crater Lake in the winter. Unfortunately, as we drew closer it began to snow. By the time we got there the wind was blowing really strong and visibility was next to nothing. The above photo would be quite the scenic one on many other days as Crater Lake would be in the background. As it was, it was all we could do to keep from getting blown off the snow cliff into the lake far below.
